Whilst some blood can be brought up due to coughing it is usually red/pink and there are many other causes so you need to consult a doctor. Here is some advice from NHS Choices.

Hi Perfectblue,You say that you have a planned visit with your dads respiratory consultant.May i suggest that you diary such events as your dad coughing up blood and any associated symptoms such as signs of infection(raised temp, extra breathlessness)increased sputum output and changes in co;our from the norm etc etc.It is likely the consultant will want to do an thorax/abdomen X ray front and back if history of bleeding and possibly a ct scan if he wants greater clarity.Normaly as the NHS choices web site advises there is nothing to worry about.

Please convey my best wishes to your dad and continue being the loving daughter and conscientious carer that you are for him..................skisx

Thank you so much ski for your advices and comforting words for me and my father, or my family rather.

You might want to supply a sputum sample for testing so that the doctor has that information already before you see him or her.

Perhaps a telephone appointment with the doctor so that the relevant tick boxes are indicated when testing is carried out.

Usually I speak with my doctor when this happen and they arrange for the paper information to go with the provided sputum sample for testing.
