FEV1 - what does it mean?

Hi, this is my first post here and not got a diagnosis yet but having tests done and hoping all is ok. Is it a good thing to have an FEV1 value above the normal range? It was 138 and I read that normal range is between 80% and 120%. In the process of trying to work out cause of breathing problems.

That's very good. Often athletes or singers can have a lung function well above the top range too.

FEV1

This value is expressed as a percentage, with normal test values being between 80% and 120% of the average (predicted) values.

You also need the FVC value similar to FEV

FVC

This value is expressed as a percentage, with normal test values being between 80% and 120% of the average (predicted) values.

If both values are within normal range the the test is deemed normal

Thank you for explaining. I think FVC was 117 so it sounds like everything is normal. I'm not an athelete or singer or even very active but it sounds like lungs are normal.

👋 Nanndake Thought might help my thinking knowledge is the FV forced volume when you exhale air & Fv breathing in is the the lung capacity off oxygen your lung fill. Usually god 109 percent . Below 50 run into diffucultys shortness off breath . Mine is 30 lung capacity lung function doesn't function on emptying bad air gaz exchange . Bernadette x x

Hi Nanaedake, my Fev1 is 132%, so similar to yours! My issues are caused by reduced gas transfer values. Did you get any results for those yet?

What am I looking for in the test results?

Look at the values for tlco and kco. There will be a number and a percentage given for each and probably a predicted value too, which is the reference value. Let me know if you need more help x
