Good riddance.

I'm big on things nostalgic,

On how things used to be,

Except there is just one thing,

I'm glad you rarely see.

It has to do with shopping,

When you wanted something fast,

Maybe in those smoking days

When you've just put out your last.

Hopefully you've stopped smoking now

So that can never be.

Now it will be something else,

Like bread or butter or tea.

You feel that you must have it,

To the shop you're on your way.

Finding when you get there,

It's 'Half-day Closing' day.

Hmmmmm, I live 2 minutes from a Co-op, 3 from a little Sainsbury so it's usually a lust for Jaffacakes at 11pm that tips me out late at night 😳

That brought back some memories Don. I grew up in a family of shopkeepers and my poor Dad worked every day of the year except Christmas and Boxing Day and three Bank Holiday Mondays in the year. how we looked forward to Thursday afternoons when he took us to the hot brine baths with the cake shop on the way home.

Most shops around me took Tuesdays. Started the week Monday half day closed the following day, made on sense to me. Others took Wednesday and I could never remember which was which. I always seem to chose the wrong one. 😡 Thursdays made more sense.

Oh lord! You've just brought to mind the sheer desperation of running out of ciggies on early closing day. Had to wait for the 'offy' to open, too shy to go in the pub by myself even if it did add an extra 20 mins to my walk. It seems somewhat ironic that as a smoker, daily exercise was a necessity - in order to get my fix but now.......it's sometimes just a bit of a chore to go out for no particular purpose.

They used to pull a cig machine in front of the door when closed. Put money in, select and pull drawer. My mum used them many a time when she ran out.

I'm glad I just got the tail-end of shop counter service when the shop keeper had to collect everything from behind the counter. I prefer self service supermarkets where you can go at your own speed, fast or browsing.

Though wish the good old days of retiring at 60 was still here!

I miss the chairs that shopkeepers used to provide for their customers. I didn't need them then, now that I do they've gone. (Must be a rhyme there somewhere.)

I miss the chairs that used to be

In every little shop.

When you'd walked around a lot

You had somewhere to flop.

But now the supermarkets

Like to keep you on the move.
