Hi all! I was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis in 2013. I was wondering if this condition is classed a disability as I'm not sure what to write on forms or for travel insurance etc. Thanks x

Hi you need to put down all relevant information on travel forms so you must tell them about any illnesses such as bronchiectasis. And any others you might have. If you have a claim and you haven't given all the info then it could be turned down and your insurance would becomer invalid. .

Bronchiectasis is on the list of disabilities for VAT relief, we had VAT relief when we changed the bathroom to make it more disabled friendly but like all these things it depends on how it affects you. It is certainly an illness to declare on applications for insurance, after all if you had an exacerbation while away it would be unhelpful if you had to pay for necessary treatment. Better safe than sorry.

I have Bronchiectasis and I just bought travel insurance for a road trip to Germany I will be taking with my wife, in June. I did it with Saga online, and on the form it asks you for existing conditions. I put Bronchiectasis. It then asks more questions about frequency of chest infectons requiring antibiotics. You then follow the instructions and eventually you get a quote, which you don't have to accept if you want to try elsewhere. I did accept because I think that £62 for two of us is not bad for peace of mind, knowing that all pre-existing conditions have been declared and we are fully covered should we need it. (my wife has no pre-existing conditions, lucky girl) I'm 75 and my wife is 70.

Hope this helps.

It depends how you are affected. I've had it for almost all of my 66 years, colonised with pseudomonas the last three. I married and had 2 children. Now retired four years, I play golf at least twice a week, average four times in the summer. Must say I've never felt better through healthy diet and supplements. If I go on holiday I take emergency antibiotics with me. For that reason I don't declare it for travel insurance purposes but you have to weigh up the pros and cons depending how you manage it and how it affects you.

I'm glad you're so well but that sounds risky to me. If you have e.g. an appendicitis you almost certainly won't get cover if you haven't declared the bronchiectasis, even though it's irrelevant. Imagine the cost of being flown home specially because of a fracture - or worse!

I agree with bwp91. Up to you, but I would not take that risk and don't think you should be encouraging others to follow your lead!
