Your Dr. was correct. The first thing to do when diagnosed is to STOP smoking as that will slow down the progression. I stopped after 47 years. Next is diet and exercise. Google copd diet and exercise, you will find a load of information.
Hi Swerve.
Has smoking slowed down the COPD? I'm trying to stop my son smoking as he has just been told he has it. I wish I could post him all the comments on here. I have mentioned the site to him and I hope he will come on here. I think he's very worried at the moment as he has been told he has some fibrosis in his lungs and his Father died of IPF. He is 49.
Hi, yes not smoking slows down the progression of COPD. Once he gives up he will notice a difference in breathing and will find within a year that his PFT results will have improved. If he does not give up the lungs will get worse. I tried many times to give up but realised that i did not really want to however: when i was diagnosed with stage2 COPD in March 2015 i gave up smoking within 12 days. Changed my diet, started exercising more and a year ago started taking cannabis oil rather than medication. I am now borderline stage 2 with a REV of 78% ( 80% would be classed as stage 1). What has helped me and should help your son is ecigs...they work.
Thanks Swerve. I have just taken a photo of your comment and I'm going to send it to him. He did say he's giving it up in the New Year. So I'm hoping he will.
Hi, he needs to give up. Smoking is what probably caused his disease and if he does not give up he is only making it worse. The only way to slow the progression down is to QUIT. Then concentrate on diet and exercise. I quit after 47 years, so if i can do it so can he.
I so hope he will. Do you have fibrosis with Emphesema? It's the fibrosis that really worries me. He says he's giving up smoking but I wonder if he's serious. He doesn't want to learn about it or be told. I can't talk to him. Is he still burying his head in the sand? I'm not sure. I think he's scared! I want to help but I don't know how!
Hi,
Was curious to know how cannabis oil helps? If you are comfortable sharing. Thanks
Hi Coleen17, Cannabis oil is a natural bronchial-dilator so i don't have any need for pharmaceuticals, especially steroids. But it seems to open up the lungs better than any inhaler etc. I have not taken any medication since December 2015 and my FEV has increased from 69% to 78%. My blood pressure is also down from mid 140's to mid 120's to 130's. Sats are steady at 97-98%. If you can get hold of the weed you can make your own, PM me and i will send you some links. Or you could grow your own, which is by far the cheapest method. I have recently purchased a grow tent to grow my own. Seeds are very cheap.
Hi Lynn & welcome to our forum. I'm afraid your doctor has given you the best advice you could ask for. You need to STOP smoking if you don't want your COPD to progress at a faster rate.
You'll get lots of help on the 'Quit' forum of HU, your surgery, your pharmacy. It's a very difficult task for you but one I would recommend you do.

Your doctor gave you great advice about smoking, but it's up to you if you take that advice. Make sure you stay active and have a good diet,as someone has already stated. Stay well, and welcome to the forum. Xx
Great replies there so up to you where you go from here in terms of care. Do try and stop smoking though, best thing you could do. Xxx
I am sure you will be able to find a new doctor - not so sure about a new set of lungs though... x
Your doctor is correct. Continue to smoke if you want but you will sick faster and die sooner.
Hi Lynn, they're your lungs so not up to us to tell you what to do; however, I would imagine that 70% of the folk on this forum have been smokers and are frustrated by people who cannot accept the grisly results of the habit and just carry on regardless. I got away with smoking a pack a day for 60 + years and my reward has been COPD and asthma - not nice. Fortunately I have a loving, caring son who, after my last blue-light admission to hospital, got me an electronic cigarette - that was seven years ago and I have never smoked since. I realise that you are in the U.S and are being massively misled about the "Dangers" of vaporizers - our Public Health England endorses them as 95% safer than smoking. They are, as I said, your lungs; but I think a new approach to quitting is required rather than a new doctor, who will doubtless give you the same advice.
Hi Lynn, you need to quit smoking now as your doctor advised otherwise take a look at the world and all that makes living worthwhile because it may well be the last time you get the chance.
Hi Lynn I got diagnosed 18 mths ago and guessed what smoked didnt pack in and believe me I payed for it 45 and got the lungs of a 70 year old woman but I have been stopped 6 months took swimming up wont say I am 100% fit or it was easy because theres times I could just grab the nearest one , but Im hoping to go back to work and get a life I had back and its thanks to the medics that IM still here so if you want to smoke well carry on but in the end you lose out not your doctor its not is live that be over
Really! It doesn't seem like you want advice. Go to another doctor, keep smoking they are after all your lungs. Before you have a daft attack read some of the posts, not everyone can be wrong. Please wake up and listen to your doctor.
Well done for quitting smoking COPD, I think you are maybe a bit mad at your docter's bluntness. To be honest, if I had not been reassured by mine, I might have smoked myself to death, thinking there was no point stopping.
The first thing I asked mine was, "Does everyone end up on oxygen?" He said "No" and at that time, because I knew nothing about COPD, the need for oxygen, was my greatest fear, (I thought you couldn't breath at all without it.) so, I needed to hear oxygen could be avoided, to give me the incentive to stop smoking.
I know a lot more about COPD now and have been through the stages of denial, fear and grief. You will to. xx
T.y. it's just very scary hearing you have a lung disease. So it's been great not smoking, and having a positive attitude towards a better life
Stopping smoking was such a relief for me, I was still smoking, ( Although I had cut right down.) For nearly 18 months after my proper diagnosis and the stress of every xig I had was causing me incredible anxiety unrill, I finally had a melt down.
I'm really peound of myself, for stopping it, despite not really wanting to.
I used to love smoking. It was my one weakness lol. xx
Your doctor may be right, or then again, you could be one of those poor souls for whom oxygen isn't the answer and your organs slowly stop working, a bit at a time. Changing your doctor won't change the reality of COPD. Believe me (10 years on oxygen now) oxygen is a better option. Continuing to smoke is the idiot's choice.
Catnip
Howdy neighbor! I'm in MN. I quit after 50+ years and feel much better. I did have to go on oxygen at night though.
All the research shows that people who stop smoking improve their chances of living longer. But that is only part of the story. Those with a low or high BMI also put themselves at further risk. If you have COPD you can use greater amounts of energy so your diet needs to take this into account. If you can get on a pulmonary rehabilitation course or go online and follow the exercise programme, people who do this increase their chance of long term survival even more. Make sure you have your pneumonia jab and the flu jab every year. Doing nothing except changing Doctor is just putting your head in the sand and waiting for the truck to hit you!
