Hello, I am 48 and have been told I have background chronic airways disease. I used to smoke, have given up and have a spirometry test in a few days. I have been given little information and told to just carry on as I am. Any help or advice as obviously I am a little worried.

Hi
No point in saying don't worry.
You've done the best thing in stopping smoking, this also should include second hand smoke from others.
There is little to do until you have you test and the results are in.
Hi Bridget. A warm welcome to you. Good luck with the spirometry test and make sure that they explain things to you in more detail. There's lots of lovely people on here to chat to and gain valuable knowledge from, so I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Take care. Pam. XXX
Thank you so much. I'm not sure what I should ask but will take your advice and make sure I understand what's going on.
Hi
Welcome to the site!
Until you have your spirometry results you can't second guess your situation . you've done the best thing you can by stopping smoking. do try not to worry too much and I'm sure you'll find plenty of support here
Best wishes
Thank you, this is really helping. I live alone and it's very daunting as you all probably already know.
Hi... There are lots of single people on here who know how you feel. The best advice I can give you at the moment is to write down any questions you think of for your consultant and if you can take someone with you to your appointments because its not always easy to remember what they tell you
I hadn't thought to do that! such a simple thing but had overlooked.
Your thoughts are probably all over the place and thats natural just be kind to yourself and don't take too much notice of things you may read on the internet
It's so hard to not look and see what you can find out. I'll try and calm down until I've had this test.
I know that honey I read everything I could and scared the life out of myself. It will be better when you have a full diagnosis then can find the information you need to keep you well. Until then enjoy the posts on the forum and get involved but ignore some of the terrible jokes you will read on here
Hi, welcome to the site and well done for stopping smoking. Good luck.
Welcome. A big pat on the back for stopping smoking. Wait for the tests & listen to what your Dr tells you & as has been suggested make notes & take someone with you. Leave Dr Google alone, there is an awful lot of rubbish that will simply frighten you unnecessarily. xx
Hi Bridget, welcome to the community. Well done for stopping smoking.
Hi Bridget nice to meet you. The good news is if you have 'background Chronic Airways Disease' it means just that so you would be very mild. Let us know when you get the results please. x
That was just the comment I needed as I try and settle myself to sleep. I certainly will let you know. I am so grateful for everyone's support.
This is a great and very informative site Bridget so any problems or questions there will always be someone who tries to help. I won't tell you not to worry coz I know how you feel, but it's time to deal with it when you know the results. Take care. x
Hello Bridget, Welcome to the site. Juse wanted to say hello; we can help more when you have your results. It is an anxious time but try not to worry. Well done on giving up smoking. x
Good morning Bridget - a very warm welcome from me too. No good telling you not to worry because we have all been where you are today. Honestly the spirometry is not painful in any way. The nurse will explain everything to you, and ask if you don't understand what they tell you. You won't be rushed. Keep away from Dr Google too.
Packing in the smoking was the best thing ever, and try to avoid others smoke too.
Let us know how you get on won't you?
x
Good morning. I will definitely let you know. It's reassuring to talk to people who understand and I slept better last night . Dr Google is certainly evil but at least I found this community.
One good thing then I take most of it back......
Hello and welcome Bridget
Hi Bridget welcome to the group. And well done in stopping smoking I am 2 year stopped. At least after all the tests you will be put on the right medication. And you can get on with the rest of your life take care xx
Hello Bridget, welcome to the group x
Welcome to the site as some have said you have done the hardest ting in giving up smoking.
I was diagnosed at 42 I gave up smoking put on weight so as soon as I was free from cigarettes I took up swimming exercise is very important. Ask your GP to refer you to rehab {PR} the information you gain is worth its weight in gold I was 51 when I did my first.
We are always hear to help and support and you can always ring the BLF nurses take care oh and don't forget your flu jab every year.
That all sounds very positive. Have you stayed the same or has your condition worsened?
sadly no a couple of years ago I got quite a few chest infections so that made me worse. It really important to keep away from people with the flu and exercise one of our members have a tree mill
