Good morning piping from a sunny and warm morning in the UK.

This is a stunner of a Magnolia - It will give lovely shade later on. Is that another one at the back?

Good morning Jennifer,

I shall start blowing immediately if not sooner. I hope your weather picks up over the weekend. I won't upset you by saying it's perfect here - not too hot and not too cool :-D

Another gorgeous photo of a beautiful Magnolia. Do you know the variety? It may be the angle of the photo but it doesn't look enormously tall.

My best flowerer is probably 35 years old & is a a x soulangeana, sold to me as "Nigra" but I am not 100% sure it is. It is now so tall you really need binoculars to appreciate it, or a very tall ladder. I have a shorter wine coloured one, very similar to yours, called Susan. It is quite common in the UK but mine at least has nothing like the profusion of flowers yours has. It is one of the things that irritates me about Susan, she flowers for a long time but a handful in succession is not as joyous as a profusion all at the same time.

We like gardening on here, and cats, some of us really like cats 🐱🐺☺! xx

Penelope it is actually Chinese in origin and was planted by my grandfather about 110 years ago.It is only about 20 feet tall but shows its age with the beautiful moss on it's branches. The flowers are like this for about 6 months. Will find pic with house behind which will give you better idea of tree size. House pit deceptive as has 18 foot room height.

Hi piping, your grandfather must have been in Australia in the 1900s then.

Two of my husbands ancestors went to Australia during the gold rush and we still have a few of their letters describing the harrowing conditions .

Wow that is very old, an impressive age. Now I look more carefully it does look a tad gnarled & I can make out the moss & lichen. How wonderful to own a garden of such longevity. I assume your grandfather was a keen & knowledgeable gardener. Do tell us all about the garden, the size, aspect, planting etc. I am sure I am not the only one who who would be fascinated & please post some more photos. Are you a keen gardener yourself? Penelope my GRANDFATHER WHO WAS THE CLEVER ORIGINAL DESIGNER.mY 91 YO FATHEF LIVES THERE ON HIS OWN BUT IT IS ME THAT LOOKS AFTER THE GARDENS AND MAINTAINENCE with some wonderful help from a gardener who has helped on the property for over 50 years himself.Neither of us are allowed near his vegetable patch. It is an unusual garden in that it is right in the heart of the city.

How lovely that such a haven of tranquility is in the heart of the city. Even more remarkable that the same gardener has worked there for so long. Well done you for helping your father to maintain such a remarkable place, it must be a great comfort to him.

I do hope the property continues in the ownership of your family & that future generations can love & care for it as you clearly do. Perhaps your adorable great nephew, such a cutie ☺!

I know very little about the city except a friend of mine's sister lives there. Is there a town called Ballarat (sp?) fairly nearby? My friend went to an exhibition of portrait paintings there when she visited her sister earlier this year & sent me loads of photos.

I would imagine your house & garden are on some sort of historic houses conservation list, as it would seem to be one of the earliest in the city (digging deep here to schooldays geography, Was Melbourne founded mid 1800s?). If not it should be ☺. Penny x
