Hi, I have been given one, on discharge last Sunday.

I had Type II Respratory sp. Failure,. The Resp nurse explained to me about CO2 retention, and what the oxygen needed to be set at. However the nurses including Sister, where not 'in' on the plan......... They continued to 'over-inflate' my lungs, bringing back on the resp. failure.

After failed requests to turn down the O2, I sorted it myself, wearing the face mask at a jaunty angle, it delivered a lower level, my failure to respond to O2 suddenly picked up, and I started to make progress. Oooh, I wonder why?

When I saw the Consultant later, he asked about the 'angle' of the face mask, so I told him what had gone on, he smiled and said why don't they (nurses) follow up on recommendations? And that I had done the right thing.

Isn't it sad that patients have to be aware of things that could kill them, just because the 'proffesionals' only follow 'accepted protocols'

I hope he spoke to the nurses and explained what they had been doing wrong. Just so's they don't try to kill anyone else :) Good luck with your recovery, I hope you feel better soon.

Sad, isn't the word I'd use. It's negligent - and that's being polite.
