EVERY NOW AND AGAIN , AFTER SLEEP I HAVE TO GET RID OF AN AWFUL AMOUNT OF MUCUS - PRESUMABLY BUILT UP INSIDE ME DURING SLEEP AT A HORIZONTAL POSITION - A POSITION WE ALL ADOPT WHEN HAVING A KIP ! BUT , I THEN HAVE TO STAND BENT OVER A PLASTIC CONTAINER TO COLLECT IT ALL WHILST BRINGING UP THIS VILE STUFF UP, AND PERHAPS WRONGLY , I STICK TWO FINGERS DOWN ME THROAT TO HELP IT ON ITS WAY ! - LEAVING ME GASPING FOR BREATH AND - SWEATING PROFUSELY, I EXPECT ALL THIS IS WRONG, BUT THIS " SESSION " LASTS ABOUT 20 MINUETS , BEFORE I STAGGER BACK TO ME COT TO REST FOR A BIT TO GET ME BREATH BACK ! . ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCE THIS AND SUGGESTIONS FOLKS ? THANKS MUCHLY ! ...

Hi Vittorio I have the same problem when I wake up but it takes me about an hour to get all mine up its disgusting isn't it but I suppose all part of the COPD.I take carbosisteine capsules 2 X 3 times a day, also I use a flutter which helps when you blow into it and it makes you cough it up....That is if you have any wind to puff it....I read on here from someone that they take ACV and that helps to thin the mucus so I've started to take it I'm only on day 3 so I don't know yet if it does any good....But I'll let you know it certainly has helped stop cramp in my legs since I've taken it xx

I think the prob is you don't cough it up in your sleep and you villi sweeping action is subdued - so you have more retained & your breathing evaporates the liquidity and make it thicker& stickier, too.

Try the usual stuff: Avoid coffee, dairy, fatty foods especially in the evening. Drink plenty of water (they say not tea or coffee, but I find black tea or ginger tea helps) and ask dr for mucodyne (carbocisteine mucolytic) which doesn't work for every one (or in my case makes me cough all day, so I just take one in the a.m.). See what helps, keep a food diary - we're all different.

Best wishes

Don't please don't make yourself vomit doing this - that will damage your esophagus. Look up some of the breathing techniques to bring up mucus like huffing or autogenic breathing. Inhalers, nebulizing, vibrating vest, and an aerobika device keep mine fairly easy to get up. Any of these things will help. Best to you, Nancy

It might help to sleep with your head raised - you could try it.
