Chronic cough 15-20 times a day. Cannot eat a meal without coughing even before I try it and during the meal . I get like an explosion of air sometimes accompany by phlegm.
I am not a smoker and never smoked.
I take seretide125 and omaprazol for a hiatus hernia but see not benefit at all.

Thank you for your reply! I feel I don't drink the 2 litres you are supposed to .,. But how can drinking more help With cough? I was told at least 10 years ago that I have asthma and gave me the inhalers but I am Not sure I am as the only problem I have is the cough and they don't help.
I personally have to drink 1.5 litres a day as I have heart failure as well as 1 lung and COPD....before I went into hospital I hardly drank 1 litre a day but can honestly say that drinking does flush the body and make you feel better in yourself so do try it for a week at least and see if things don't improve slightly, also good idea to get checked for COPD ...and maybe your inhalers need a review too .... keep us posted and good luck x
I will try to drink more water ..before I thought it was a diet fashion suggestion but knowing it might help with the cough I will definitely try harder from today! Many thanks!! I shall post if I feel any improvement! Good health wishes. To everybody!
Great let us know how it goes ... I only tend to cough much when I have a chest infection coming and then I kind of have fits of coughing which has folk rushing to pat or rub my back ... which is the worst thing they could do at the time !!! but they think it helps .... All the best with the experiment x
Hi there can be many causes of a chronic cough. Do you have a lung disease such as copd etc. or are you being investigated for one? x
Hi Finita, Pete has a chronic cough bad cannot eat without choking. He has to have a drink with food. He has sarcoidosis and COPD and has always coughed.
Tell us a bit more about yourself and can maybe offer more advice.
Go to the doctors & get a referral to see a specialist. I had similar problems & have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis after being treated for many years for asthma / COPD.
I take omeprazole for the acid reflux then the bronchiectasis is controlled with inhalers and various drugs to help control the mucus production. The other treatments include physiotherapy as it's important to keep the lungs as clear as possible to reduce infections. Unfortunately it is a permanent change to the lungs.
Many many thanks for the info!! I take omeprazole and the inhaler Seretide as well but I feel they don't give me any relief from the cough.., even DRINKING water makes me cough! So I think I will visit my GP and see what he says! I feel a bit more informed now. Thankyou again!!
My husband had a chronic cough as you discribe and has now had an MRI scan and been diagnosed with pulmonary Fibrosis. He had this cough for 2 years with doctors not finding out correct diagnosis till we changed doctors. Ask for MRI scan. I also paid £200 for private throat specialist. He found nothing😡😡now I have a very ill husband
Thank you for your helpful reply. I think I have a MRI and it was ok but shall check medical records as I get confused with x rays etc. my best wishes for your husband getting better!
I have pulmonary sarcoidosis and cough up phlegm. For four years now I have done Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT) - also known as huffing, every morning and evening, taught to me by hospital physiotherapist to help cough up the phlegm more easily and I hardly cough at all. If I don’t do it at night I can’t sleep. It takes time but it is really worth it. I also have a nebuliser with prescribed 7% salt solution from capsules which I use for ten minutes or so before I do the ACBT to loosen the phlegm. It takes time but it is really worth it.
You could ask your doctor to see a physiotherapist, but in the meantime here is some instruction on ACBT. There are others in the internet. papworthhospital.nhs.uk/doc...
Thank you for your very complete information . I have received so much useful
Information from everybody that I did not know it existed that I will have to sit down and put some order to it and put whatever is possible in practice! Many thanks!
I too have had this cough for the past three months it seems worse at night my upper body aches all over, beginning now to cough up bloody phlegm, getting me down now, I've had moments when I've recovered only to get it back again.
