Fit to fly assessment or Hypoxic Challenge test

I had hoped to fly to Cyprus in March and had been waiting for the ok from my consultant that I was fit to fly, like when I went to New York a few years ago and I have flown regularly in the UK of the last few years without giving it a thought. I thought my illness was pretty stable but he has told me I need one of these before I go. What can I expect? I think they need to take blood from my ear lobes!

Grateful for any advice on it. I have already made up my mind that should I need oxygen I won't be going as the airline does not provide and as I am not on o2 I don't really want to have the hassle of taking it with me.

Thanks

Marie

Hi Marie, one way to find out,get it done 😊 Then you can decide what to do.

You might find you don't even need it,good luck,

Well obviously they'll do your blood gases, either from your ear lobe or your wrist. Other then that I don't know. Have you done a six minute walk test ? I'm sure somebody here wil have had one done and can fill you in. Hope it works out for you.

Marie, I would go for the test then you will know for sure if you're ok to fly.

Good luck & hope it goes well for you.

You sit for about 30 minutes or so with an oxygen cylinder and they lower the pressure to the same as an aircraft if your oxygen levels fall to I think it's 88 you will need oxygen,or on the blood test its below a certain figure, can't remember exactly it's 7 something.I hope you don't because it will affect your travel insurance, most airlines have oxygen for free but you fo have to book it,and each airline want different info.i was in an awful battle with Thomson in October as they would not accept my Certificate which was valid for 6 months, they want one dated within 28 days,I was flying to the USA and had booked and paid .Hope you don't need it,as it does become a real hassle.Best of Luck Sooki.

Thanks Sooki

I haven't booked any flights yet and the two operators that go to Paphos don't supply oxygen. If I do need it then I just won't go. I can't be bothered with the hassle and there are stil lots of places in the UK I have seen that I want to see. Hopefully I will be ok but I suppose you just don't know until you have done the test. Will just have to wait and see.

Fingers crossed you won't need the oxygen - please keep us updated as I think I may need to do the same for my next flight. x
