I read the other day that scientists have identified that people with smoking related lung conditions have a faulty gene.
That's supposed to be why some smokers get emphysema and some don't.
I was told this back in 2011, I was also informed I was probably born with my boulous emphysema, common with tall people (but i smoked, very little but still smoked) my doctor last year informed me he was also identified as having bullous emphysema, he is 6ft 2 never smoked.

im nearly 6 ft have same as you doctor was surprised how bad lung were for age said didn't seem right even with being heavy smoker since I was 12 , he tried to say I must have smoked a lot of weed told him I never touched weed then he said when you was a teenager said no never had weed , sure he didn't believe me , funny but when asked them was a lot of it from farm dust animal feeds chemicals its always no must have been the fags
no don't think they did only got tested for alpha 1 deficiency because of age , had ct scans to see extent of emphysema and did take part of lung away ,
I've Bullous Emph but I'm 56 and only 5' 4". Like you mm doctors surprised mine was severe he also asked about the pot smoking (never have) also checked for alpha1
The first thing my doctor said to was 'how much weed did I smoke' I've know this practice for over 15 years, apparently heavy weed smoking causes bullous emphysema. Thankfuly iam at stage 1 with no medication required so if I keep doing what I'm doing I should be OK, they always blame the smoking no matter what.
" I was diagnosed with cage bird lung disease when I was doing my Veterinary work for The.. British Egg Standard's Board......( Remember the little lion on your eggs ) I had to daily check each Laying Hen.. To meet there health standard's... I was then told I had Cage birds Lung Disease.. But never really got treated for my lungs.. Just the little blue puffer as it was then called... even though my weight was dropping of me... Until later last year... I was then diagnosed stage 4 COPD....So I now blame my working environment too.. as you have mentioned with your work Mmzetor...for my lung disease...But!! No!!... I smoked.... And was all of my own making... I wouldn't mind...But! ( Working alongside livestock.) Is a no.. No for smoking... Plus I smoked All of 5... a week...Awful.. wasn't I... and was still told its the cigarettes'.. that caused it.. time will tell. I agree though that Genetics' are the biggest factor...To a lot of Disease's... My Father... had lung problem's the last 10 yrs.' of his life...But Life is life. And more valuable day, by day.. Have a lovely Day...Megan"
Hi I read the same and it said that 5 genes were newly identified with lung disease which goes some way to explaining why some people can smoke all their lives and die with healthy lungs at 96 and why others can't get away with it. x
I only managed to smoke for 15 years befor problems began, pleurisy , collapsed lung, many chest infections, lung bullae now codp here's to old age at 42
Well that would explain why only 1 in 4 smokers get COPD there must bee a reason why some get it and other don't
