Good morning to you wedder, lovely picture, chickens are so comical, and it's good night from me, 2 in the morning here, hope it's a clear night, as get the moon light straight into the bedroom and it's going to be a blood moon, I'm up so late because I'm rather fed up with someone I saw today so a little irritated, hope you have a good day xxxx
I used to feed our chickens a mash made of oats and maize flour and any vegetables that needed using up, cooked with water for a while until soft. They also loved chick weed, which used to grow rampantly on my vegetable garden the moment my back was turned.
My grandmother always fed her chucks on stale bread soaked in water and corn...but they were very poor. My neighbours hens have fresh veg, dried meal worms and chicken food as well as scratching for their own titbits. .....expensive eggs.
my Grandma and granddad used to have a small farm, and when I was little I used to stay with them in my school summer holiday.
Very Happy days..... I will never forget The thrill of being sent to the hen house to collect the eggs for our breakfast......My Granddad teaching me to fish for trout in the near by river...Back to the farmhouse where we gave the cats the minnows and had the trout for lunch....My granddad would shoot a pheasant or rabbit for our evening meal, followed by blackberry and apple pie for pud...all the fruit picked by me and my grandma from the trees and bushes.
No Telly, no computers, no smart phones, no internet, no junk food, just a wonderful childhood, and now, wonderful memories.
sounds lovely to grow up like that , sadly nearly all the little farms like that have gone round here now all the barns cows yards been put into housing , the farm I use to help on as a kid is all houses now , he use to bottle the milk by hand straight from the cows and sell round the village , when he had bottled enough he use to give me a jug to take to the farm cats it was still warm from the cow I use to drink half the jug then top it up with water so looked like a full jug so much better than milk now
forgot to mention, I taught myself to swim in that trout river and made a good job of it, a few years later I swum competitively up to England level...packed it all in when I was 16 years old, I had to make a choice...swimming or boy friends and mad nights out with my mates having fun.
Well you all know me by now....the swimming had to go !!!!
looking good and healthy Andy maybe when you go to the market you could ask the bloke you bought them from where best place is to get it from they would be better if you can get layer pellets or layers mash as has right protein content for making eggs as it does take a lot out of them laying a egg a day ,
ha ha mr velvet must have got you trained better than I have her she is laying in bed watching tv I even have to get my own cup of tea and breakfast , he must pass on some tips to me
I used to love my 4 pet hens when I was a teenager (WW2) They were so tame and all had their own personality. Then one night, the fox got in ----I can still recall the noise that went on. Big sadness. X
