Storm...............ferry attempting to berth

huggs profile image
33 Replies

This is our ferry attempting to berth in a previous less severe storm, than we have had the past couple of days. Ferries were suspended all day today (WED) and most of yesterday. This photo was taken a few years ago, and on that occasion gained a hole in her hull.

Hi Rib,

Glad someone else is up. I cannot get to sleep because the storm has started off again, after a lull. Its very noisy, between the wind and the thunder and things being blown about in the street below.

There will be no disasters this time as the ferries aren't sailing meantime. It wasn't a huge hole, but enough that it returned to the dry dock for repair with only a skeleton crew and an escort vessel alongside in case of emergency.

I was going to get in touch with you Rib. I don't know if you followed the entire post about 'followers' in which you said you wouldn't be posting as much anymore. If you return to the post you will see what has happened in that regard. I contacted HU and received an email back which I copied and pasted for everyone to see. I think your fears will be allayed.

So what is keeping you up tonight, or is it regular for you to be up at this time?

Take care,

I am sorry to say that I woke, saw the message light flashing, read your post and so replied and went straight back to sleep.

Hope you survived the night. I will look for your post. Rib

Hi Huggs. I do hope the wind is easing now. That looks suspiciously like a Calmac boat to me! xxxx

huggs profile image
huggs in reply to Chris3

Hi Chris,

The wind is easing up a bit, but it was the thunder and lightening too that kept me awake and we lost some power again for a short time.

That is indeed a Cal Mac ferry, but the photo was taken several years ago, as she tried to berth. Yesterday there were no sailings, and only 3 on Tuesday.!!!! So no fun to be had watching them try to berth again!!!! lol

take care,

Hi Huggs. I live further west than you I suspect so am only too familiar with calmac and berthing problems. I am visiting family in Edinburgh so missed the latest onslaught.

Take care

Hi Chris,

If you are further west than me, then you will be well use to the conditions in winter off the west coast due to wind and ferries etc. I lived in Edinburgh for around a year as well, but love the peace here and the beauty of nature. It does have its disadvantages however.

Talking about berthing problems......... the pier in the photo at Weymms Bay has been so damaged by the oversized ferries that work is to commence in Feb/March to repair it, and so will be closed for around 18 weeks during which time we have to sail to another port. Fun and games ahead.

Take care,

Hi Jimmy, :)

Don't you worry, I am lovely and cosy, and really warm. It has been an awful night again due to the wind, thunder and lightening, which was overhead, and even Felix was jumping out of his skin and went and hid under the bed covers. :d

You will be getting it a lot colder on the east coast, so hope you are nice and snug too, and I hope you don't overdo it at your group today. :)

We lost power through the night twice, for short periods so nothing major.

Wasn't it nice of us on the west to act as a buffer and wind breaker for you all on the east. :p

ha ha

Take care Jimmy,

your pal Huggs xxxx :) ;)

Crikey huggs. What a night you must have had. Long as there's no holes in YOUR hull that's ok ;) take it easy today - its pretty blustery on the coast here but we're on the east so less so. Yve is walking round with Dora the dog this morning, Yve being the survivor of that 15 hour op, made of pretty stern stuff and weathering all storms just a month later. I said i'd walk back with her but think i'll duck out. Anyway keep warm and bone up on your Ms Marples technique, we may well need your skills again one day ;) ;) xxx

huggs in reply to O2Trees

Hi O2,

That photo was taken several years ago, and although I was dog tired couldn't sleep for the wind, thunder and lightening, so I had a look to see what storm photos I had and just posted this one. Got to sleep sometime after 6 a.m. .We lost power again for a short time in the middle of the night.

Yve is doing so well after her enormous op, although this is not ideal weather for recuperation or breathing!

I am lovely and warm, and will probably just have another lazy day as it is too windy to venture out.

Take care, and don't get caught out in the wind, as our lungs don't like it.

hugs from Huggs xxxx

Am off on the high seas in about 10 days time and am getting very worried. Seeing these high swells is making me wish we were staying home. These worries are increasing the grey hairs.

Do hope Huggs you have battened down the hatches and are staying

as snug as a bug in a rug. If this weather continues I shall be joining you.

Hi budgiesmom

I hope the weather has calmed down a lot for you when you set sail. It depends where you are going as well.

Also depending on how long you will be at sea, it may be worth getting sea sickness pills and a band for around your wrist, which the chemist stocks.

Hoping it has settled down by the time you go, as 10 days away is a while yet, and this was a freakish weather bomb, so I am sure it will not be near as bad when you go.

I am still bunkered down, and although still very windy, is not as bad as the previous two days.

Take care,

Morning sweetheart - just to make you jealous. Outside my bedroom window there is bright sunshine and a light breeze. A smattering of frost on the cars makes this a perfect day.

Hope you managed to get some sleep finally. Take care and to help a little, a reassuring, soothing and healing hug, complete with lullaby is on its way to you.

Love Dozy :) xxx

Morning Dozy,

Ha ha. So where about are you then? I can still see the moon!!!

I looked at the clock and it was 6.10 a.m and then I must have fallen asleep until around 9 ish.

Its still very windy, but not as bad, so hoping things will die down very soon, At least things have stopped whizzing through the air.!!

Thank you for the lovely warm soothing hug and lullaby, what a lovely thought.

You take care,

hugs from Huggs xxxx

Stay safe Huggs and I hope the storm has eased. It is a lovely sunny morning here but I think there are some nasty weather systems lurking. Xris x

Hi Xris,

Thanks, and I am staying safe, and by tomorrow it will be over with and a nicer sunny day awaits us, although it is to be freezing.

Hope you don't get any really bad weather, but there is nothing we can do about it.

Hi easter,

Welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy your time with us, and get some help, support and humour along the way.

The ferry is berthing at Wemyss Bay on the mainland off the west coast of Scotland, after sailing from the Isle of Bute.

Hi eyes,

Yes, we had, had it by then, and then got it again.!! I am nice, safe, warm and cosy and all bunkered down. Every time I say it is dying down it gets up again, but it is still not a day to be out in. As I type we are getting battered with hailstones, wind and sleet.

The bold Felix, is wanting me once again to open the window so he can hang out.!!!! Not today young man. lol

You take care too eyes, and hope you avoid the worst of the weather, but I think most of the country is to get some of it today. Hope I am wrong.

Take care,

Good morning Huggs, the weather forecast was right, really bad night for you from the sounds of it. It was a bit stormy down here in the Midlands but now the sky is a lovely summery blue only the temperature says it is winter. I have a friend who hates thunder storms she closes all the curtains and goes to bed. Not much fun having power cuts too when it is stormy, how do you cope with that side of it and not being able to get out? Things like that just throw me into chaos, even though I know I can't do anything about it. Hope the storms are subsiding a bit now stay safe and warmxx

huggs profile image
huggs in reply to katieoxo60

Hi Katie,

This is the 3rd day of the storm now, with yesterday being the worst. I hope. The combination of the wind, hail and thunder and lightening wasn't great through the night, and Felix took shelter under my duvet. Wise lad. The power cuts were brief this time around thankfully. Living on an island makes you much more aware of the weather and forecasts, so we knew this was coming, and I got all prepared with extra supplies in the other day. A couple of years ago we had another weather bomb which caused a hurricane then. We were without power, ferries, phone and internet for 3 days which was hard. Luckily I was prepared then also, by having a calor gas heater, camping stove, camping lantern, a torch in each room ( where they remain to this day) so that if the power goes off at any time in the dark I know instantly where to find light without falling over anything. lol Also plenty of candles etc. This time was not as bad as that as we have maintained power for most of the time and it was only off briefly on three occasions. You just have to be organised, that's all and once you have bought the stuff, you bring it out when the forecast is bad for wind.

Hope you don't get too bad weather, although it will probably be freezing.

Take care,

hugs from Huggs xxx

Sounds like you are well prepared Huggs, part of the life style. I always keep my cupboards well stocked up incase of bad weather or illness and candles at the ready plus a lantern torch, but I am not too equip as far as heating goes, used to have a paraffin heater but they don't allow them now. Usually have to wrap up with blankets if they last too long. You sound OK and well organised speak again soon xx

huggs profile image
huggs

Hi Katie,

I am prepared as I can be. As far as heating goes for yourself a small calor gas heater might be the answer. The gas is quite expensive (£36) for a large canister but if you look around you can get good deals including the heater and gas, in two sizes. I always think if you are warm, then it is far easier to cope with everything else. I haven't found the calor gas detrimental to my breathing, but when I last used it, I didn't have copd. They can cause condensation though. A couple of flasks are also a good idea if you have to rely on a camping stove.

I had an appointment on the mainland last week, so glad I made it over, and it wasn't this week!!

Do you get a lot of power cuts where you are, or have you been affected by the awful floods. I don't even know how I would begin to cope with that devastation all around.

Take care,

hugs from Huggs xxx
