You might be able to get some benefits but it all depends on your illness and your circumstances. Best thing is to ring BLF on 03000 030 555 as they have benefit experts there who can advise you. They are open Monday to Friday x
Worth looking here first. Go to your local CAB too. But look at it as you go as it seems to come up with what you may be able to claim as you go though it. so at the end if you miss it you think you cannot claim a thing.
You will find that some are means tested and can only be claimed at certain ages. Some like PIP you can still work and it will not be affected by any other income. ESA you cannot work except in an approved Organisation. ESA is in 2 parts Work related and Support and can be income related or contribution based ( at least 24 months unbroken NI payments).
What ever form you get and fill in, I would find what office they want it sent to and then go to your local JSA and get them to fax it though (you will need an appointment to do this) I have found that they have a habit of saying they did not get it in the post! I sent all mine at the start by recorded delivery and once I gave the time and date of when it was sent and signed for they always found it. Same when it is faxed you can state time and what office it was sent from.
I claimed ESA and had to go to appeal and won Support Contribution ESA. I will be looking at mobility PIP next as I am not getting around very well at all now.
Be Well
I get PIP and support group ESA, and that's with Bronchiectasis. Follow the previous advice here, but I'm sure you'll be able to claim both.
In short - nothing! You may get a blue badge if you're lucky, but that's about it unless you're near to deaths door!
I ditto Nikkers. I couldn't even get Blue Badge despite being severe COPD and struggling to walk with a stick.
Try benefitsandwork.co.uk Gives information on what you can and cannot claim. Also step by step guides on form filling. There is an annual charge of about £20.00. Well worth every penny.
Hello alex757, the benefits system as changed vastly in the past few years, and with certain illnesses you are expected to make all attempts to work even if in different employment to usual. Seek benefits advice, as previously suggested. Keep copies of all forms filled in especially any medical details submitted, proof of sending and if in doubt fill a claim form in anyway, so you don't loose your right to a benefit due to late form submission. But most importantly look after yourself don't be pressured just because you have been retired on ill health grounds. Every best wish for the future
