Welcome Beel123. Not sure what you can do except have a chat with your Doctor and tell him/her how you feel about steroids and Ab's. You do need to get rid of your chest infection first then start your regime of healthy eating exercise etc. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be here soon to help you. Take care xx

Hi Bee123, concentrated steroids for six days is recommended treatment for persistent infection, but infections can be difficult to clear up on occasions. Plenty of fluids help to flush the germs out of your body. Sorry I forget to say welcome to the site. Hope the infection clears up soon and you feel a little better.

Welcome Bee. You could ask your doc re putting in a sputum sample - it could well be that the bugs you are growing are just not sensitive to the antibiotics you have been taking. A sample, although it takes a few days to come back, will tell you and your doc what you are growing and what it is sensitive to. This will probably mean more antibiotics, but as Suzy says you can then start the healthy stuff when you feel a bit better. Good luck.

Good Morning Bee123, I care for my husband who suffers with severe COPD. I have found that over the years if he gets an infection it can sometimes take three or four courses of antibiotics and steroids to clear up the infections. I personally feel you have to have the antibiotics and steroids, you need to clear up the infection. It might be worth asking for a sputum sample to be taken to make sure you are taking the right antibiotics. My husband used to refuse antibiotics etc. and I think that his disease progressed in part because of that, infections can cause further damage to your lungs.

I have used manuka honey successfully - I can remember him having a bad infection and finished his abs over the weekend so I made him have a teaspoon of manuka honey in hot water every hour more or less for about two days and he certainly improved. In the long terms and to try to prevent infections - he now takes Vitamin D3, omega 3,6,9 and 1000mg of vitamin C a day. My Mum recommended yesterday that she has used covonia for chesty coughs and feels that helped her clear her chest last week - though she suffers with asthma.

The best of luck, but I think in the first instance you need to get on top of the infection. Lots of love TAD xx

Hi there, which antiB did you take? I'm guessing Amoxicillin as GPs use it as their standard lately. Amox is pretty useless to most of us on here. It has never once helped my infections in 5 years of them so I refuse it.

I have Azithromycin in my emergency meds (also prednisolone but I won't take that either, makes me feel ill).

I would heartily recommend you take antiBs to rid yourself of infection. Long term or repeated infections will take their toll on your immune system.

Also take copious fluids plus 1000 mg Vit C 2-3 times a day while you're unwell - this was recommended to me by GP, a nutritionist and a dentist!

- good luck.

Try calling BLF for guidance on what you can get from medics and also an information pack: 03000 030 555

I do know how you feel, but please please please talk to your doctor/nurse. I have had some awful infections quite regularly and would love to be able to handle them "personally" but the steroids and abs are what help and I really did get myself into a dreadful state once by trying to get through without them....talk to your GP, BLF. Good luck.....:)

Ask your doctor for a sputum test to see what infection you are growing, he can then give you the right AB to cure it. Sorry your having such a bad time, try not to worry too much, I know it's not easy. Good luck x

There are some really weird bugs going around at the mo - I had to take my first Amox and Pred in 4.5 years after 3 weeks of feeling really poorly. Started with swollen glands, infected sinus but hardly affected chest/asthma for quite a while. Like most of us I hate taking abs etc but forced to and they worked. Strangest symptom is total loss of appetite I eat like a horse normally, I can only face very highly spiced stuff - e.g curry which I seldom fancy. To my relief my neighbour told me his brother had the exact same symptoms, he couldn't shake the "taste" thing for 3 months so I can soldier on with the knowledge that I'm not the only one!
