Have you been diagnosed with sleep. Apnea I used to be like this until I was given a CPap machine which changed my life. I was working still at the time and it mean that I could carry on for another 3 years once I could sleep ok.

I've not been diagnosed professionally.

Your sleeplessness could be caused by your inhalers , try taking them earlier, I always take mine no later than 6 pm so that they don't keep me awake. Also I have cut caffeine out of my diet completely ie; no tea or coffee, I drink Redbush tea and herbal tea, and I found that helps too. If coughing in bed is a problem try an extra pillow and water to drink at your bedside, also try a hot milk in bed before you try to sleep it always makes me sleepy. Good luck tonight x

Thanks, but I'm a coffee junkie, I do my eve.inhalor about 3 30 ,if it doesn't happen to everyone then maybe it's a fear thing,as I go to bed as it's light about 5am or 3am and. Up at 5am always, don't know how I manage with no sleep,I've always had 8good hours.

Hi Colours23, I to find that I only sleep for 2 -3 hours at a time. My GP suggested raising my pillows so that I don't lie flat so I bought an adjustable back rest. I put this under my 2 pillows at its lowest setting and it has improved my sleep so now I can go up to 4 hours. I have asthma and copd but also a condition TBM that allows my airways to partly cllapse when I bend or lie down. I hope this might help you too. Darth

Hello Colours23. My experience is the same as Darthveda's. GP offered the same advice and I now sleep for 7 hours and not the 2 or 3 that I coped with for 2 years. Good luck !

Hi,now that's a thought ,I think it's safer than oral steroids ,yes I would not be without my inhalers so I can fit my life around those hours of 1-2 in the morning ,not good in the winter months, body's low.

Same here Colours23. I sleep for 2 hours then wake up, off to the loo and sleep for another two hours. Sometimes I wake up completely and can't go back to sleep so I get up, make a cup of tea and read a book or do my ironing (which is lovely when the mornings start to get light and the birds sing). I used to say you could set your clock by me but I find that my friends who haven't got COPD, also have trouble sleeping the night through, we laugh and say we ought to ring each other up and have a chat or even get together as we live so near. So just remember Colours23 you are not alone, I will think about you tonight when I wake up. Take care. Lizzy.

I remember trying to stay awake in my office and finding it so difficult, walking around the car park trying to wake up. I went into the Brompton hospital for sleep studies and they said my oxygen levels dropped so low in the night that woke myself up to breathe.

I remember the consultant telling me that this CPap machine would change my life and boy was she correct. I managed to to carry on working for another I two years until retirement but then, and now I still depend on it especially when I have an exherbation when I know that if all else fails I can use it to make sure I am breathing at least.

My sleeping pattern is all over the shop I have COPD sometimes I feel I could sleep 23 hours wake up and still feel tired.

I'm back on steroids and antibiotics but I also had a call from my GP today I have pins and needles in my hands and feet the blood test I had shows low level of vit b12 this could also have something to do with being tired all the time.

My Mom also had COPD and she hated the summer could not breath and could not sleep but she always sat up in bed. I hope you get your sleep pattern sorted soon

hie am kev from new Zealand i had the same problem my doc put me OX-PAM [OXAZEPPAM TA10MG] now i get most nights 7 to 8 hours sleep. i hop this helps

Hi colours 23, I found that the steroids kept me awake but the GP gave me a sleeping pill called zopiclone and I sleep right through now. It doesn't make me drowsy during the day and doesn't seem to have any detrimental effects. It certainly makes life a lot easier and has been a boon to me. Popplewell
