It is one of the most usual antibiotics used to treat bronchiectasis to stop infections. I have used it for years with no problems. Unfortunately as I have an immune deficiency it doesn't work very well for me now. There a lot of people on the site who say it has reduced their infection rate dramatically.

Alanjudy, it's a big relief to hear that you have used it for years with no problems as I was a little worried about possible long term side effects. I have used it for about 18 months now and unfortunately there has been no decrease in my number of infections. I was a little puzzled yesterday at reading it listed as one of the drugs used as an immunosuppressant in a post-transplant scenario. Do you know how it works in this way ? Thank you for your information, A.

Argana, are you sure you didn't read the name Azathioprine? its an immuno-suppressant used in post-transplant. I am on it (and azithromycin).

I have been taking azathioprine for 3 years and azithromycin for 2 years.

Perhaps I did get it wrong Marie or perhaps the blog I read it on confused the two drugs. Sorry for any confusion caused by my comment.

Hi mommalou, I have been on Azitheromycin for years, I take one tablet a day. It certainly seems to keep the infections at bay. Good luck. Take care, Lizzy.

I take it three times a week since December fingers crossed infection free so far, I did have continuous infection since June.

I use it in as a cure when I have infections. ie a couse consisting of 3 days on, 10 off x three. Half the time I have to take a second course.

Was also told that if I have bronch I would be px it as a prophylactic 3 times a week.

It's supposed to remain in the system for up to 10 days and also have a drying up effect on mucus - medics informed me.

I have a very sensitive digestive system but I'm fine on it (unlike others).

Been on this drug for about 6 months now & it has certainly thinned the mucus. Hope you find it does the same for you.

Hi, I am on azithromycin every day, as I have COPD hoping to have the dose lowered to every other day, COPD people are often put on the to help with infection, almost acts as a barrier, when things get worse or we get a really bad infection the GP or Consultant tends to select another Antibiotic to work along side. I do not have too many worries, read all the scary articles but then I am at stage 4 so just take what ever I can to keep me going. Hope thios has been of some help, Good Luck
