It's to check the oxygen levels in your blood.

Hi Kimmy my oxygen levels at rest are 92 to 94. When active can drop to 88 but soon climb back up.

Think that's the important part, that they come back to normal fairly quickly.xx

A good explanation here for us all.

That's really good at rest, my respiratory nurse told me they like it to have gone back to normal after ten minutes physio nurses five, it's when it doesn't climb back up they worry.

An arterial blood gas (ABG) test measures the acidity (pH) and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood from an artery. This test is used to check how well your lungs are able to move oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. The balance between the two is vital to prvent damage to organs in the body.

Not the most pleasant test but the results are quick and the information gained is vital to know which treatment to give. The last one I had done was performed by a doctor who looked about twelve years old (am I getting old) and I hardly felt it, she was brilliant. Like a lot of people on here I am a retainer so the medics need to know the levels so they don't make me worse with too much oxygen..

I'm on oxygen 24/7 ( LTOT) and have my BAGs took quite regularly as I'm a retainer too so they like my reading between 86/92. But on exertion it drops rapidly to 73/78 I just stop sit and wait for them to comeback up which they do eventually!
