One week later ...

Feel free to ignore as I'm just talking to myself really to relieve the monotony of hospital! A week ago I posted asking if cocodamol could cause chest pains; the answer seems to be that a sudden strike of some lurgy or other was the cause. This is my 3rd life threatening respiratory crisis in two years now (no I don't smoke though once did for far too long). Amazing I keep surviving these things but at just 54 and doing all I can I'm flummoxed by how ill I get (recovery this time is slow indeed) and TERRIFIED of having to go through this awful and literal inability to breathe time after time. I know it'll improve over time and also that there is no cure and I'm so much luckier than many but ... So very very depressed my guaranteed future of "help! I can't breathe!" Just feeling a bit sorry for myself at the moment.

As I said, no need to respond but it's cathartic for me to express myself!

you are more than welcome to chunter away, what are the hospital saying they can put in place to help you? Hope you recover soon and go home to your own comfy bed. Take care. x

Hope you are feeling better soon. The good news about being in hospital is hopefully you will be given the meds that will help you breathe easier and help stabilise you, and the other good news is once well enough you can go home, oh yes and also, you can keep warm and dry

Its blowing up a storm out, heavy rains and strong winds, snow for some parts.

oh Struggle you poor thing, no wonder you're depressed - anyone would be.

Have they told you the reasons why this is happening to you? Which hospitalare you under? Have you got family & friends to support you?

Can't walk more than two feet yet so home not appealing immediately

We're the same age and you could be describing the last two years of my life, so I feel your pain. I have emphysema what do you have. What's happened for you to end up in hospital this time. Xxx

Hi kimmy

Same thing, emphysema and bronchiectasis but, in my case, swine flu in 2011 was what really did the damage ... My general lung function is around 37% which whilst limiting is manageable BUT the slightest bit of trouble on top of that seems to instantly move things to crisis point

You are not feeling sorry for yourself and have the right to express how you feel after such a terrible bout of illness. It must be so scary not to be able to breathe and I do hope that things improve for you. Coming on this site is great and you will always have lots of support. Express away and take care. Well I'm thrilled to say that today I'm actually up and about - what a difference 24 hours makes! I'm now on ambulatory oxygen and have set my own goal of going home, oxygen free, on Tuesday!!!

Don't give up hope, After two years of thinking like you that there was no way forward my consultant came up with an anti biotic that has greatly improved life. The amazing thing I learnt was how much work these guys do on our behalf in the background. My GP shows me all the letters and information the consultant sends him, he follows up every sputum test and visit to the GP. Just because I am not sitting in one of his valuable beds it does not mean they have given up on me. Hope you are recovering well don't overdo it and ruin all the good work done so far

Thanks moneal - so glad your situation has improved. And you're quite right, I must guard against thinking I've suddenly become a prime athlete overnight! It's too easy to think you can manage then to find you've stupidly put yourself in a fail situation. Slow and steady ...

I am Jimmy and thank you I tire easily and have sustained nerve damage to my fingers (go figure!) but my breathing is ok so all is well!
