Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency is genetic in origin, and smoking isn't the only risk factor for COPD - about 22% of people with COPD are never-smokers.

I have had COPD all my life, also never smoked.
When I was told that I had "severe" emphysema some 15 years ago, the consultant made a sort of "throw away" comment that I also had the Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. He didn't explain what it meant, because the knowledge was in its infancy... It's hereditary and is just something with which we live. Just do what you need to do, to keep healthy! Make sure that you don't ruminate on the unfairness, and end up with depression!!!
I would have thought if you are not working you could get some help to pay for your medication. Why not ring The BLF Benefits team. They may be able to help. I may be wrong but it is worth a try. By the way I'm sorry you have your illness.
You're not the only one at all. I too have Alpha-1 and COPD and I never smoked. I've just been diagnosed PiZZ so I'm still finding out all I can about it. It explains a lot about my family's traditionally "weak lungs." I thought it very strange that although I was active doing lots of exercise I never got very fit and had lots of lung infections. Now I'm having to come to terms with all the things I can't ever do again, and lead a different life altogether. Trying to keep healthy and be happy, that's what is keeping me busy right now. I'm so sorry about your sister.
thanks so very sorry you have got it how long have u had it I know a lot about it that all I do reading new things all the time t=I think both my mam & dad had it both always had bad chest because I am ZZ my daughters the doctor said they will have one Z they maybe carries x
For u to have zz both your parent will of had it I got refrrred to a genetist alpha 1 is like a break on a car it ment to stop the infections we get from damaging the good parts of our lungs but because we either have none or a little we dont have that protection so u dont have to be a smoker cos there is loads of things that can cause us problems like dust , flumes , airasols, cleaning products etc
