I found a second cousin once removed on social media. His great aunt was my great grandmother. He gave me some Intel my mother never did. It turns out my great grandmother was living in Newington, London and wanted to marry her deceased husband’s brother. Since Canon law and the Catholic Church prohibited such a wedding, they moved to California to avoid running into any church people.
And Bob’s your uncle. 😀

What an interesting story Sharp. I have been researching my family for quite a few years now and found such very interesting things back then. I dont mind what I find good or bad, after all, those things happened a long time ago and its all in the past. Perhaps you will be motivated to now do more research into your family. Good luck.
My brother discovered that my great grandparents were not married until after their five children grew up and his first wife died. No easy divorce in the nineteenth century!
My mother gave me all the family birth certificates and marriage certificates a few years ago. I discovered, by simple arithmetic, that my great grandmother had lied about her age on the occasion of her second marriage (to a much younger man). Second marriages were common, men died young and women needed someone to provide for the children. Women have always been pragmatic. I thought it was hilarious and hats off to her especially since in her (second) wedding portrait she bore more than a passing resemblance to Les Dawson! You know, when he did that face and the arms under the bosom? I’m full of admiration for her chutzpah!
