Sorry you are feeling so down, I think you will gain from this site especially regarding how others cope with COPD and how log others have had it. The BLF helpline can also help. Exercise and eating well also helps but the best thing you can do is give up the cigarettes completely. I gave up 3 years ago and yes it was hard but now I cant stand the smell of them.and and the sticky clear mucus i was bringing up cleared up within weeks. You can moan as much as you like on here so welcome. Joyce
Joyce .... I have usually got a good sense of humour but I needed a child like moan... and many more yet. I really do want to leave work and live. I will stick to the ecigs which do work and have certainly helped me to mostly not smoke. I used to smoke at least 20 and more a day plus on a night out any obscene amount!!!!!!!!! So am pretty pleased with my progress. Thanks again chuck Recommend 0

Love Wendells xxx

Wonderful you have given up smoking, I know what you mean about going out for a drink it goes together like bacon and egg, I stopped smoking several years ago, had four attempts but then there wasn't a smoking ban in pubs so had to stop drinking as well.
Welcome Annie, you could have quality of life for a long time, if you took certain steps to help slow down the progress of COPD. Stopping smoking is one of the big steps that will help you achieve that.
If you can get a referral through your GP to attend a pulmonary rehabilitation course this will give you the awareness and tools to manage your systems and if applied to your every day life will give you a greater quality of life and the progression of lung damage can be slowed right down and even halted in some cases. To achieve this is not without adjustment to lifestyle and personal effort for sure but the rewards are worth it.
Wishing you every success and feeling more hopeful in future days.
Best wishes BC
Hi Annie
Your quality of life need not change so very fast ...and may well not as long as you quit the smokes.
My lung function is pretty much what it was when diagnosed three years ago, and there's no reason to expect a rapid drop as long as I stay mostly clear of infections/exacerbations.
Your life is not over, and your quality of life can be good for years.
Would not working be a good thing, I still work (mind I dont hate my job) and I think I would become a total couch potato if I stopped ...not quality of life or likely to make me live longer.
COPD can take many many years before it majorly affect you, there are people on this site, still active and getting about (maybe a bit more slowly) who were diagnosed 20 or so years ago
Be positive, your have lots to live for
Beth xx

Hi jamash,
In 2010 on top of COPD, I got Mycobacterium Avium Intracellulare (TB-like bacteria). I nearly died of it. Fortunately, my doctor found it and gave me two antibiotics to take for at least 2 years.
I did this faithfully. He had me take oxygen permanently.
I decided to improve my condition. I signed up to the gym, 3 times a week. Of course, the staff at the fym didn’t want to believe I wanted to enroll!
After a month with O2 bottles, I could manage to go using less oxygen. After 2 months, I left my bottle at home. After 4 months, they came to take the oxygen supply away. I still go to the gym 3 times a week.
Only yesterday, 15 Sep, I felt so cold, even with the heating on, I thought I was going down with something. I shall carry on drinking hot drinks and wrapping up in a jumper, a fleece and a beanie woolly hat!
Thank you for that it is very inspiring. I was just being a misery guts. I could be a lot lot worse. I shall endeavourto remain my usually positive self.
Keep warm and keep the Beanie on : xx
