Have you been supplied oxygen via your surgery if so how can it be a killer. Your question is a little unclear.

I don't understand - I assume a medical professional gave you your diagnosis but who on earth told you taking Oxygen was a killer?

It should ONLY be taken as prescribed and as there are a variety of factors involved I suggest you ring BLF helpline who will tell you all you need to know.

They will need to know your sats on exertion and at rest and any information you have on dosage - ltrs per min. And are you a retainer.

Good luck BLF on 03000 030 555

Hello Dave, yes, unfortunately, oxygen is not for everybody and can cause serious problems for some people. I suggest, like Homebreeze, that you try ringing the BLF with all the information you have from your doctors and I am sure they will try to explain it to you.

Hi Dava

I have emphysema stage 4 moderate/severe. I use oxygen whenever I am exercising. Without it my sats fall from 92/03 to 85/86. I understand that the oxygen prevents damage to other organs such as heart, kidneys and liver etc. I have never heard of prescibed oxygen causing a problem when used as prescribed.

Thank's Pillips1 I was at my rehabilitation drop in today and was talking to another man and it was him telling me, I will have to see my nurse about it, it makes me not want to use it.

don't not use it if it was prescribed, that is dangerous if you need it.

Hi dava, reading this reminded me of being admitted to hospital five years ago, initially to an assessment ward. I have asthma and emphysema. I was having breathing difficulties at the time and as the nurse began the oxygen asked whether I had asthma or copd as I wasn't to have too much oxy if I had emphysema. Lovelight

Think They Might Of Been Talking About Hospital Ventilators Are Well Known To Blow Holes In Your Lungs .... But That Was Few Years Ago

No, it was oxygen at that point daz That's interesting though, cos I went on to have a severe asthma attack a couple of days later and then had to go on a ventilator for two weeks. Would like to think the technology had improved by then?!! Lovelight

I am on oxygen for fifteen hours a day, and my consultant told me people on oxygen tend to live longer because their organs are better protected. Keep smiling

think I would get reassurance from your doc. If you are a Co2 retainer (carbon dioxide) then oxygen I was told has to be used very carefuly if at all. Think if prescribed should be OK but everyone makes mistakes, so worth a check methinks. also please ring BLF helpline - they will be able to advise you well.

it was the doctor from the hospital who prescribed me with oxygen, but when i was at my drop in the other day it was one of the other men that told me, that it had killed his day thats why i was in a bit panic.

I would take more notice of a doctor than someone at a drop in. By the way what is a drop in?

The drop in is the Pulmonary rehabilitation Center where we go every 2weeks to do exercise for our illness and they have a respertry nurse and helpers there to see we are ok

Hi.. Can anyone tell me how to get oxygen at home? My sats, even without exercise are 88/89 and then go down to 85/86 later in the day. I was in hospital the other weekend for liver problems and they gave me 02 and my sats went from 88 upon admission to 99 after 6 hours with oxygen...but then a dr came and said I didn't need oxygen and after I returned home the sats dropped back down to the usual 90 first thing in the morning...88/89 mid day 84/85 evening time. But I don't know how to get anyone to listen to me...I am seeing my specialist on the 27th,....is she the person I ask to get oxygen supplied at home? And does anyone know if having low oxygen sats can be normal for a person? Thanks
