My husband has developed cough syncope and would like to know if others have it and how they cope.

My husband has COPD and has developed cough syncope where his head and face go dark red and he faints and jerks about when he coughs too hard. its really restricting his life as he doesn't know when it will happen and doesn't know anything about it when it has but I am really worried about it. It happened again when he was in hospital recently and the doctors said what it was but haven't offered any treatment or help. does anyone else have this problem and if you do what do you do about it , i would be so pleased to hear from you.

Hi whitefriars

I have emphysema stage 4. When I have a real coughing fit I go red and sometimes have a sort of mini blackout. If I feel it coming on I immediately go down on my knees and rest my head on the floor. Then if I do black out I am not going to damage myself too badly. So the only advice I can offer hubby is to get down low quickly.

regards, Bobby xx

Hi Bobby,

Many thanks for the response, unfortunately he isn't mobile enough to do that now. At the moment i try to make sure someone is with him most of the time to help and i have bought a lifeline button for him but it is a worry. Its interesting that you sometimes know when its coming on though i will see if he does as that might help.

kind regards

Hi Whitefriars. I am also stage 4 and I get this when my coughing is particularly protracted. I am fortunate in that I do not have a cough except when I have had a chest infection so coughing is out of the ordinary for me. This means I can take precautions when I start to cough. I tend to make sure (if I am downstairs) that I am sitting well back on the settee, or laying on it or (if I am upstairs) I try to get to my bed and lay there. Fortunately it has not happened often

Many thanks, i am hoping that it will only happen when my husband has a chest infection too and it cheered me up when you said it doesn't happen often. As its a fairly new symptom for him we will have to wait and see. Many thanks

When I cough I either pass out or get dizzy & faint. I went to a massage therapist who worked on the back of my neck where I have the upper 6 vertebrae damaged. It's been a month now and I an symptom free.
