Hi I have been prescribed Azlthromycin 3 times a week for my Bronchiectasis. Anyone had experience of this and the possible side effects.

I know some people have had side effects and this might be tempting fate but I feel very well on it. One infection in the last 14 months. It's had a huge effect for the good for me and I really hope it has for you too. It's all about weighing up options, do the benefits outweigh the possible side effects. Good luck.

I am on it 3 times a week for the same condition. It has made a big difference to me I get less infections than I used to. I do not have any side effects, and have found they have improved my life. As i have a seriously brain damaged daughter and my hubby is also disabled they have been a godsend to me as before them I was really struggling. I also have other health problems so I would not be without them now. There has been some reports of side effects such as heart problems and unproven hearing loss in some people but my consultant explained the benefits would outway the possible side effects he also regularly checks my heart since I have been on them. and gets my GP to check (with an ecg) in between appointments.I hope this helps you in any way and the very best of luck with them Best wishes Julie

Twice a week for me and now 6 months without a bad exacerbation. No side effects not even the usual antibiotic runs :D

It would be worth trying at least that is my recommendation.

Thank you all for your helpful replies . I have to say until about three weeks ago I havent had an infection for several years . I do a lot of running and my main problem is coping with the excessive coughing.

Hi there my hubby has been asked to come to the hospital next week, and try out a nebulizer but they said that they would be introducing antiibiotics through it twice a day for the rest of his life I think it is called collimisation (sorry don't know how to spell it) has anyone information about that, he has been very poorly over the last six months in hospital 5 times now with bad turns, and they are going to try this to see if they can keep him out of hospital, just not sure what it is all about.

I've found it marvellous. Such a relief to have something that works.

I've read the contra - indication is a heart problem where you'd have decide the pros and cons. P

My husband has been on this regime since early February and he has not had a chest infection since. The first day he took it he had the 'runs' so decided to take the tablets very early morning and have his breakfast late morning. This has worked for him and had no problems whatsoever. He thinks it is the best thing ever.

Hello, thank you so much for asking about me, I really appreciate it.

No things are not good, he said to me today, if he didn't need me to look after him I could b####r off.

I am at his beck and call 24 hours a day, the nights are the worst because I am so tired that when I fall asleep I am dead to the world but he keeps on calling until I see to him. I am at the moment having my tea in the front room to get away from him as if I have my tea with him he talks non-stop about his illness, cough, sputum, urine output asking me to get this and get that which means me having to leave my tea and get stuff for him.

He is now calling me to tell me the dog wants to go out for a wee, I only took him out 1/2 hour ago, he is just trying to wind me up. I am so stressed out you wouldn't believe. I want him to buy a mobility scooter but he says he needs to check out all the prices, I have told him we will go to a shop, sit on one and if it is comfortable buy the damned thing as I am sick of lugging the wheelchair in and out of the car and having to push him round in it together with his oxygen.

I saw on the news that the GP's are being asked to look after the carers in case they need help for stress. If the GP saw me he would put me in a mental hospital for a rest. How can one man with an illness be so time consuming, everything has to revolve round him from morning 'til night.

Pete takes this drug Monday, Wednesday and Friday and (touch wood) is doing very well on it. Has been on it for a few years now with no side effects that I can think of. Good luck and hope all goes well for you. xxxx

Sadly I can't tolerate Azith for any length of time. My original chest consultant said they have an anti-inflammatory action and less inflammation means less mucous so are a good prophylactic drug for bronchiectasis and COPD.
