Going away to get some sun hope everyone feels better x
Depends on where you are going and state of your health at the time. I can only offer the advice give to me by my consultant when I asked the same question. If you are flying it is best to stick to short haul flights, i.e. 4 hours max. Take an emergency supply of meds with you (Steroids and anti biotics) if you normally have them with flare ups. . I like you have Bronciectasis and also have other health problems. I wanted to go to cyprus for my 30th wedding anniversary a year ago and I was determined to do it, so off I went a little nervous of the flight and how my health would be but I want to live with the attitude that I will not let this illness control me and I will do as much in life as I can, I had a lovely time did not over do things and made sure I paced myself so I did not get too exhausted, the end result was a week in the sun did me alot of good and I believe it helped set me up for the winter. I also made sure I had a letter with me from doctor listing all my meds and illnesses incase I had to go into hospital, which I did not need but gave me great piece of mind. I went in December as it is milder then, its best not to go anywhere where the heat is to extreme If I were you I would go for it especially as you sound as if you have a good support network with friends and family. Good luck with whatever decision you make and let us know what you decide.Best wishes Julie xxxxxx
Glad you enjoyed ur holiday in Cyprus. I live there and I find the heat and high humidity in the summer really good for my emphesma but I guess everyone's different. But as its so pleasant in the winter I don't suffer from sny problems that u lovely people have to put up with. I have a flu jab and one for pneumonia. All my medications are available over the counter in the pharmacy even antibiotics. If they don't have the exact brand there are always generic alternatives so don't let that put u off. I'm in reverse at the moment landed in Birmingham on Wednesday (I'd forgotten how cold and wet it is) and 2 days later a cough has appeared and sob is worse. Is it worth it to see my new grandson and my 10 month twin grandsons well yes. The warm weather will be waiting for me in 3 weeks. Wish you as well as you can be
Sunshine and good company must help you enjoy your holiday. Dont push yourself too much. sure your relatives wouldnt mind you having some quality rest times. Hope you keep well x Joyce
Do what lovemelovemydogs,,,,advised and go,,, relax in the sun
Go for it. Just don't go anywhere so hot you need air-conditioning and as Loveme says, shortish flights. P
Have a lovely time, try to think of being well not sick and please bring some of that sunshine back with you! x
When I was young my gran used to take me to Weston Super Mare for the air.
I always used to have a cough and it used to clear up after we were there for a few days. Also my dad had emphysema and he used to go to Weston and at the end of two weeks there he could walk the length of the front.
I would love to be able to go for a few days.
polly xx
Hi like everyone else has said go enjoy yourself and takeyour back up meds. I'd love a break but with 4 children at home and grandchild every week day not a chance!
As long as your friends understand you need time to rest should be very uplifting for you x
Go for it. It will do you the world of good to get away from the usual daily grind. I went away for a few days last week and really enjoyed the break. Go at your own pace, relax and enjoy!!.
Some sun after a long wet winter sounds a marvelous idea enjoy a good time with your loved ones.
yes, i agree, going away if you are able to does you the world of good. especially where the air is fresh and warm. I suffer in England much more than i do when im in Spain. Mountain air is exceptionally good for people with chest problems. I have copd, but not nearly as bad as some people, and i am fortunate enough to be able to come to Spain whenever i want, but i spend a lot of time in England and suffer physically with chest infections and tiredness etc. If you are well enough to travel, go for it, short flights are fine, as long as the cabin crew know your situation. Enjoy, all the best.
Most people don't get worse in the sun and if it is a little humid too that can help. I agree with lovemelovemydogs .... Pace yourself, be well prepared and don't tire yourself while travelling. Stay hydrated! Go and enjoy yourself!
I've just had a week in Italy where it was sunny and 23 degrees every day. We were near the coast and the sun and sea air was just what I needed after a horrendous winter. I was diagnosed with moderate COPD in February but the day after I arrived my cough disappeared and I was able to walk miles with no SOB - I even rode a bike for the first time in 25 years with no problems. I believe it is the cold, damp climate, coupled with allergies that cause my problems and my holiday is proof that if I'm in the right environment I am perfectly well. Wish we sufferers could get regular seaside holidays on prescription!! Hope everyone enjoys their summer and that the weather is kind!
I agree with everyone else I too have bronchiectasis and asthma and I,m on oxygen therapy but I would go while you can. I ' m finding it very difficult to ger holiday insurance now , when I,m abroad the sunny weather suits me I always feel better. I always go with friends or famiily, I managed to get holiday insurance this year (at a Price) so I'm off on a cruise to Norway for a week in June. The main thing for you to do is to be well organised before hand. Go and see your doctor and tell him your thinking of going abroad and he will make sure that you are well enough to travel. Most airline ask for a fit to fly letter from your doctor. My doctor gives me a transfer of care Letter and it has all the information that you might need if you land in hospital, but I have never needed it yet. I f you think that you will need help at the airport you can request a wheelchair and save your energy if you have difficulty walking up the stairs of the plane, they will put you on a lift, as long as you let the airline know all this when you book. The doctors and medical staff want you to lead as normal a life as possible.
