Weight loss and eosinophilic asthma

A year ago I fell ill with necrotizing pancreatitis, and was in hospital for a few weeks. It was difficult to eat, and for many weeks after I left hospital too, so the weight just dropped off! I was 25 stone, and now, a year later, I'm 16 stone. I had gone onto a pancreas sensitive diet, which is very healthy, and found it hard to get back to anything like the calories I used to eat, so I am still slowly losing weight. I noticed that as I lost weight, my asthma seemed to improve, and at my check-up at St Barts, their serious asthma unit were pretty amazed by how much I'd improved. They have since discharged me from the unit and returned me to the care of my GP. I just want to say that it is easy to go into denial about weight and the effect it's having on your health, and I don't want to be pious - after all, it was the pancreatitis that kind of forced the weight loss on me - but if you are very overweight and asthmatic, please do consider taking weight loss seriously, it's really incredible how much it improves your health.

I'm sorry you have been through the wars, it sounds terribly painful. I do hope that the NP has been sorted. I totally agree regarding weight. Apart from the additional effort on the heart and lungs in carrying around extra weight, fat tissue produces inflammatory substances that can affect the lungs. The airways also become extra sensitive to irritants. Even though it's a no brainer, losing weight can be a challenge and keeping it off is another! So well done, and enjoy your improved health; it's good to hear a success story.
