gas or electric?

Hi Everyone, is there any official advice on whether there are adverse impacts in having a gas stovetop as opposed to electric? Are the open flames on the cooker dangerous for inhalation particularly for children?

Thanks

Interesting question. I use a gas hob and sometimes my breathing is affected when I need to stand at the stove when cooking. I always assumed it was steam or some such thing.

Anyway, your question got me curious so I looked it up and found this:-

You can do particle counts with a low-cost laser counter. My feeling is that electric is safer and induction is safer still. , Whenever there is a yellow flame etc its a sign of incomplete combustion and soot formation.

A good exhaust hood, ventilation are important and a way to close off the kitchen while cooking (an actual door as opposed to open layout). Cooking oil will smoke and emit particles regardless. The oil on the hood filter is what's in the air. So replace that regularly, too.

I suspect electric and induction wins hands down, as I suspect gas is far more polluting. I don't suffer from gas when cooking, but some cooking itself can affect me, for instance if I roast off spices to add to some meal. It is the roasting or frying that really affects me. For such reasons I have also virtually stopped using oven, and got myself a multicooker for those times I want to roast or bake a meal. I am able to keep that further away from me through most of the process. I would love to have an electric induction hob, but it would require quite a lot of changes in our kitchen, so is not likely to happen any time soon.
