Chest pain*, spasm & tightness

*the pain is ongoing & is on breathing; so not a heart/emergency problem, just after advice!

Hey- hope everyone is ok and hay fever ain’t causing too many issues. I’m having quite a few symptoms currently relating to the above. My chest goes tight, spasms as in all my lungs seize up like a fist 🤜🏻 (Don’t know how else I’d describe it) and getting like short sharp pains on breathing. These symptoms keep coming and going, I’ve had them for a while and it is when they don’t go I’m in trouble and end up in hospital. My peak flow is slightly down 340/500 & feeling a bit breathless/coughing which is usual for me in June.

Has anyone heard or experienced similar things? Any advice would be great, my drs know the above!

Do you have an asthma action plan?

I have a you are maxed on everything (xolair, 2sterojd inhalers & other various tablets) if your symptoms are persisting and not being relieved by ventolin then either start pred or if really bad hospital type of plan. Had ct scan in Jan & waiting for a bronchoscopy. Then will make a plan. I’ve 9weeks of pred in Jan & another week at start of May.

Hmm, okay, might be worth getting in contact with your specialist if possible? Sounds like you're pretty severely affected! Ironically, I'm having similar issues (being stuck in yellow, etc.). Frustrating!

Wish I had some more advice to give, but I hear you and see you're struggling.

Perhaps someone else much more knowledgeable than I am will be able to come along and help you!!

I have bouts of spasms when my chest flares up my specialist call them the devil's grip and says nothing can really be done about it ..prescribed tramadol but can't take them I felt out of it so I just ride it out now...spasms only last a bout 30 seconds but can e numerous times a day on times ..hope you get sorted xx

Devils grip!! Yes what it is like, usually lasts a short time leading to coughing and being relieved with inhalers. When it is really bad it becomes constant and I end up in hospital not being able to move any air.

Hey there. Oh my. I completely understand and can relate to what you are trying to explain. But it is not a usual occurance for me though. I did get that feeling in the chest where I felt like my lungs had completely folded in on themselves and not even Tramadol could help. It was so painful and scary. I had to be relieved by oxygen and later get nebulized which was the only relief. I could literally feel my lungs unclenching and opening up. Was so relieved but I took a while to fully recover. Seretide and montelukast did the job for me. Hope you get better as this can be so scary.

Yes when it clenches it takes a lot of salbutamol or back to back Nebs. Have you ever been given an explanation for it? I’m on max including montelukast and still not stopping it.

Oh yes actually the explanation is that I had been on some medicine before that incident that I was highly allergic to. (Treating typhoid) 🤦 It first made me sick, but I ignored it (I didn't know you can actually be allergic to medicine!) I have to say I have been unable to breathe before but that was the most uncomfortable feeling ever!! If this is how you feel, you could actually double check with the medicines you are taking with your gp
