Hi

Candles as a trigger is an individual thing really. For me it depends on the scent rather than the actual burning/wax (however if I’m twitchy the smoke is a trigger). However candles won’t necessarily trigger every asthmatic! If it’s never caused you an issue in the past then it should be fine to have some burning.

Personally I take the approach of try it and see. Try buying a small one then it’s not too much loss if you discover you can’t tolerate it. If you can tolerate them go ahead and enjoy!

Good luck x

It is an individual thing, and it can also change over time. I am not sensitive to candles, but if I had the power I would ban scented candles tomorrow! Thoguh that said some are not so bad as others. I have even reacted from bread being toasted, and toasting of spices for cooking, as well as all sorts of smelly things, but in the past I never did. It started fairly suddenly for me. So just give it a try and see. You will know quickly enough.

Try sniffing them first. I explain to the shop I have asthma ask permission then have a sniff. I do it with everything. Yup I'm the crazy lady sniffing soap in the supermarket lol

Hi there, I thought I was the only crazy lady ! It’s nice to know that I’m not on my own. I haven’t been diagnosed with asthma but have been given green and now brown inhaler as I have been coughing for almost 1 year. I am the best I’ve been for a long time but still coughing or clearing my throat constantly. I’m now trying to pin down my triggers, I also get migraines ( this is where the sniffing comes in !) I am constantly irritated by smells.....perfume, candles, paint ,spices......the list goes on. I’m now wondering if it’s all linked together ?

No. They're toxic. I react to candles due to multiple chemical sensitivity.

You can Google this:

Soy candles contain paraffin. ... Potentially, burning a 100% soy candle will release small amounts of the carcinogens and toxins found in paraffin. Again, most soy candles on the market are not 100% soy, and contain a high percentage of poisonous paraffin.

Tray-ce,

Most you can do is try & see if your lungs will tolerate having candles lit in your space. Fingers x it'll b ok.

In my case, some types of candles aren't too much of a problem when unscented, though if lit, the smoke can set off my asthma but Soy candles - 😱 I'm anaphylactic to Soy in all forms! So I have definitely avoid those.
