Less weight improving asthma?

I have lost a bit of weight, deliberately, and I am no longer obese, but still over weight. I can’t say I have noticed any difference yet for my asthma, but then I am rubbish at knowing how I feel. I have noticed no difference in my PEF rates. What experience of this have others had? It is supposed to help, but does it?

Less weight is still good for my knees and other things, and it was a good moment the other day when I could buy an item a size less than I normally do, so I am happy.

I don't think I felt any better when I was skinnier than I do now. I lost a bit of weight over the holidays because I was so ill and I am still breathless all the time. I think being on steroids a lot hasn't helped me when it comes to gaining weight. However, I suppose the alternative is that I had enough weight to loose when I wasn't keeping anything down. Weight is a funny one. I wish I weighed less, but I wish I didn't feel so exhausted and run down from being ill either. I want to try to keep some of this weight off, but will see how I cope over the next few weeks. I hope you are feeling better. It can't hurt to loose weight, unless you loose too much. It's a tricky subject, filled with a lot of misunderstanding and judgement.

Yes, generally it feels good to have lost that weight, and I hope to go a bit further. I don’t think I am likely to get to what is referred to as ‘normal’ weight, as I am more concerned with being able to maintain where I am at, than being skinny (chance would be a fine thing!). I was also pretty unwell over Christmas/New Year etc, even got a bit of the dreaded silent chest, but by now I have recovered, though still have a bit of post viral fatigue thingie. Thus my eating has been all over the place. One day when at my worst I could only face 6 Roses chocolates for lunch! Not exactly healthy fare. And not something I normally have in the house. Have even made it back to yoga today (yoga for wrinklies like me), but all I do is at one speed - very slow. So proper exercise is at some distance still. Still, happy to get back to some level of functioning. And less medication.

I hope you, too, will feel better soon. I really don’t like that unwell and tired feeling. It is so energy draining in its own right!

Agree about energy draining! When I feel like this, I crave carbohydrates which isn't the best. I've been surviving off of cup of soups and cream crackers. I am a bit better than I was, but still not back to normal. I hope you feel better. Take care.

It could be worse than cup a soup and cream crackers. Yes, I also crave carbohydrates when my energy is low, and I have had a thing for Vienetta Icecream this last week......it has to stop!

Ice cream is deadly. :-P Try not to worry too much about food. It's hard. Sometimes we crave the things we need. I hope you are feeling back to normal soon. x

Thanks. I am back on antibiotics again. I can't seem to shift this. Hopefully this time I get rid of it. x

I know I push this, but I found the pulmonary rehab course at my local hospital really useful. Your GP can refer you if you want to do it. A bit of exercise and a talk all watched over by the respiratory team. You're doing so well - keep at it!

That sounds interesting, and I will bear it in mind. Just now I am doing various things that help me, so it is enough. I am on a good weight loss/exercise etc programme, which works for me, and I am about to learn to play the harmonica! It is to help my diagphragmatic breathing. I am not bad at all at that, but it won't do harm to strengthen it. And if I can do it with a laugh so much the better.
