Surgery risk

Hi all, I have severe brittle asthma, and I recently saw neurosurgeon as I have severe lower back pain. I have been told I need a spinal fusion but because of the anaesthetic risk i am not a candidate for surgery. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes my son who also has Brittle asthma has been told this, he hasn't needed major surgery but procedures where it would be usual to be sedated he has had to manage without anything. However his last endoscopy he insisted on sedation, they did it at his own risk. Luckily he was fine. It's because you are more likely to have an adverse reaction that can't be controlled

I was told this previously when I needed my wisdom teeth out. Then I had an emergency appendectomy so they had no choice but to give me a general. My lungs did react but they gave me magnesium etc whilst under and just kept me ventilated a couple of days until my lungs calmed down.

I'm now about to have another to get the wisdom teeth out. They've agreed it's safer for them to control my breathing with genreal than me be in control with sedation.

All that to say, if you meet with the anaesthetists, they will be able to make a plan to keep you as safe as possible!

Good luck!
