Not sure if new inhaler is wo

hi everyone,

when I went for my asthma check a couple of weeks ago the asthma nurse gave me a new inhaler as I only had my reliever, but I found out that even though I've only had my new inhaler for nearly two weeks I've found that about an hour or so after I've taken my new inhaler I'm having to use my reliever inhaler.

another thing that I don't like is that after I have used my new inhaler I have to rinse my mouth out, but I've never had to do that with my reliever inhaler.

I'm not sure if I should mention it to the practice nurse (as she's the one who did my asthma review a couple of weeks ago) when I see her for a follow up appointment for my blood pressure as it was slightly high last time.

Hi sophiesmummy2002 ,

Welcome to the forum. The first inhaler you mentioned (reliever) only helps open up the airways, but to manage asthma because it causes swelling and redness in you airways, you usually need another inhaler to calm that down, which is known as your preventer inhaler. This is taken usually twice a day and you are required to gargle and spit out to minimise side effects such as a sore throat, hoarse voice.

It may take up to 4 weeks for a new inhaler to work properly so we'd advise sticking to it as prescribed. It's important to take the new inhaler with good technique, there's more information here bit.ly/2t2juqH and you can your practice nurse to show you at your next appt.

If your asthma symptoms worsen during the winter do go and talk to your GP or nurse.

Hope that helps,

Dita
