Bacterial tracheitis - complication of croup

Our 7 year old daughter had the symptoms of croup, but also a very high fever and was very pale. She was treated with Dexamethazone which improved things, but not completely. She died from a respiratory and cardiac arrest because her airway was totally blocked, despite having been seen by a doctor in A and E and 2 GPs. We found later that a raised heart rate and fever with croup were indicators of a life-threatening condition called bacterial tracheitis, as was her age. Make sure that doctors rule it out if your child has a high fever or raised heartrate with croup. The information is all in the CKS NICE guidelines for croup

Thank you. I want to make sure that it doesn't happen again to others because doctors don't seem to be aware of this condition.

So very sorry to hear of your dreadful experience. Thank you also for using this to make other people aware of this. I would urge anyone who is having problems with getting diagnosis or help from their docs for a problem to look up the NICE guidelines. Maybe your Doc won't like you for pointing things out to him but it shows that you are aware of things and maybe he too should be. Goodness knows they can't know everything about everything.
