Making a Smoker's Apartment Asthma Friendly?

I just moved to Copenhagen and had a lot of trouble finding an apartment. I finally found one, but upon moving in, I had a lot of difficulty with my asthma (several attacks/day). It turns out that my roommate used to smoke in the apartment, so the walls and surfaces are all full of cigarette smoke. Has anyone had any luck refinishing a smoker's apartment to be asthma-friendly? Online it says that cleaning everything in dilluted vinegar can help, but maybe that's just for the smell? Any advice is appreciated as I don't have another place to stay for the next month. Thanks!

Try a very dilute solution of bicarbonate of soda with a few drops of lemon oil. You can get bicarbonate in the baking aisle of any supermarket. You can also use bicarbonate dry on smelly rugs and carpets, then Hoover up. Good luck!
