In the new year I need to change my fire. At the moment I have an open flued gas fire and have been told this is ok for my condition which is asthma/copd. I have considered changing this to an electric fire fitted into the same recessed fireplace. Has anyone got any information on this that may be helpful in making a choice

I think either should be fine.
If the flue is allowing fumes back into your room then asthma is probably the least of your troubles. We swapped for an electric fire (because our house is so badly built there wasn't enough room for a modern gas fire!); anyway electric fires generally blow air back into the room & I find now & again it gives me a sneezing fit but rarely any real trouble.
