How do you cope with unwanted feelings when your asthma is bad or during attacks and after attacks out of the blue.

Sounds as if you're really struggling with this Glynis. I'm just coming out of a bad patch which, to be fair, has only lasted for about 7 weeks this time so I feel that I've been let off lightly, and your post made me think about my own reactions. Although I haven't always been, I'm currently a cougher so after a couple of hours hanging over ths sink coughing I'm exhausted, bad tempered and have the emotional control of the average 2 year old. I don't want to be treated as if I'm not capable of carrying on as usual, even though I know Im not, but at the same time I don't like it when people expect me to keep up with them. - there's no pleasing some people, is there?

One thing I'm really aware of, though, is that I react badly to the medication and I think that part of my behavior is due to this, because the longer I'm on an increased dose the more emotional I get. I spoke to one of the GPs at my surgery about this and his response was that all asthma medication will cause this effect to some degree and the trick is to find the ones that you react to least.

Anyway, I thought it might help to know that you're not alone. I'm kind of thinking that if I'm feeling rough and miserable and not breathing properly I'm flipping well entitled to be a bit emotional. My friends and family understand and nobody else matters. I'm sure the same applies to you - friends and family will be suppportive and that's all you need to worry about. Personally, I find that a bit of a hug helps no end so I go and get some from my grandchildren - even my grandson will come and hug me when he hears me coughing, which always makes me feel as if I've won something. I would reccommend that you find someone who cares about you and who won't mind if you stop trying to be strong for a few minutes and admit you need a hug.

Thanks Annista lots of hugs works wonders.....lol glynis x

Hi Glynis, enjoyed reading your post, I feel the same about emotions especially following a bad attack, and bet an awful lot of us go through it too. I'm new on here but have been ""viewing"" for a long time : the kind, helpful and funny (ha ha!) comments do wonders to help me realise I'm far from alone in this. I think we try to ""soldier on"" and have to remember sometimes to be kind to ourselves. Non-asthmatics may think we can bounce back from attacks, chest infections etc.,and medical treatment does indeed save our life, but it does knock you off your feet physically and emotionally. And much as I hate to admit, getting older seems to add to recovery time!

Thanks for reading this, take care Glynis , best wishes, Alicebill.
