well on the plus side he said i clearly has asthma, and difficulties with my breathing. He said that any anxiety involvement was probably minimal, however he feels there may be 'something' going on other than my asthma. this is a big relief as in the past ive been treated as though im making stuff up, or am having panic attacks. He's currently looking into adrenal gland supression, as i have been on a high dose of seretide and additional fluticasone (which apparantly is an inhaled steroid linked to adrenal problems) and as ive been on pred solidly for 3mnths he thinks there may be adrenal involvement (he described a few symptoms which fit depressingly well) so ive been switched from seretide and fluticasone to Fostair. Has anyone had any positive/negative experiences with this inhaler? (aside from the obvious - that its a pretty colour) and ive also been moved from pred to hydrocortisone so i can be tested for for adrenal supression in a week or so. Hoping that messing with my steroids isnt going to make my lungs too cross. Ive had my uniphylinne stopped, i was at a sub-theraputic dose and i hadnt noticed a significant benefit from it and he is concerned about over medicating so he decided to stop that and see what happens. However on the negative side we arent doing anything about my asthma yet - he didnt even say what the next step might be, he said no to home nebs for the same reason as thomas' consultant and said i could try atrovent but he didnt seem to want to (although he implied it might help so i wonder if its something he plans on looking at in the future) and i was feeling all tearful that he had no real suggestions so i couldnt really argue my corner very well. No real reduction in what drugs im on, just changes (or at least the same number of tablets). It was also interesting to see that the inflammation in my lungs had gone up (although still not very high) as my steroid dose had gone down, interesting as at my uni hospital they had said to completely stop steroids as they didnt think they had an effect.

I saw from your other posts that you had a really rubbish appointment, im soooo sorry, you must be so dissapointed. I actually think it might be a positive thing if he's observed overnight (whether or not they are doing it for the right reasons) as it will mean that they get to see the everyday symptoms that you see, encourage thomas to play as he normally would so they get an actual representation of his symptoms and if there is something going on thats not asthma they might be able to work out what it is - and whether its asthma or not they will see that you're not making it up! My cxray and ct scan did not show 'typical' uncontrolled asthma signs either - that shoudnt matter as some people just dont, and especially young lungs are probably pretty capable of bouncing back after attacks, that doesnt mean there wont be damage if the asthma remains uncontrolled!) I assume he didnt make any medication changes or suggestions as they were feeling so very unhelpful! Sending huge hugs to you and thomas! And crossing fingers that his lungs behave well everynight except the one where he's in hospital where a little bit of acting up may be beneficial! x

Sounds like me, I didnt manage to fight Thomas's corner very well and was a little cross with myself for not being stronger once I got home. I almost cried in the car on the way home. I am so positive before I go but seem to crumble as soon as I go in. At least this time he agrees that it is asthma and possibly something else which they will look into, its a step in the right direction. I will be making sure Thomas has been running everywhere the day we go in for observation, a lot of the time lately he wants to be carried but there wont be any of that, mean mummy but his doctors need to see what I do.

He has been quite unsettled this evening and I have just noticed some spots on his arm, so will have to see what the morning brings although I am wondering if the dreaded chickenpox is making an appearance.

No changes were made to his meds, I did ask but she said the consultant would be the person to do that?!

Do you get coughing as a symptom with your asthma?

x

its deffo not a main symptom for me, and a lot of the time when i feel like coughing im pretty good at surpressing it. when im having a bad attack and have to take a deep breath the only way i can get the air out is to cough it out, and often when my asthma is starting to go downhill and i laugh it makes me cough.

its not mean mummy, it'll help him in the long run! I wish i was small enough to be carried, would make things a lot easier!

fingers crossed you avoid chicken pox! I cant remember if thomas is on steroids atm, but even if he's not you dont particualrily want to do brittle asthma AND Chicken Pox!!!

its ridiculous that you would see someone who cant change meds! theres no real point if thats the case! and ive had meds changed by a reg before!

Well the spots seem to have all gone rather strange that one!

He only woke up once last night and hardly any coughing, nice we may be finally getting back on track but a bit frustrating. Although as soon as he started running around this morning he started coughing although its less than previously too. I really want the doctors to see what i do Friday. There have been 2 occasions since his last appointment were previously I would have taken him to hospital but we tried to manage at home and although it was a bit scary we managed makes me wonder if I should have just taken him in so they can see its not been good.

She said it was because of the medications he's on she wouldn't be happy changing them as they are the sort a consultant prescribes she didn't seem to have the knowledge about it.
