Well done Sarahjayne,
Sounds like a good idea. Have you got your Asthma diploma? it really helped me and I thought I knew a lot about asthma. Are you a nurse prescriber? or working with GPs. I have to ask GPs to do scripts for my pts, but I am confident to step pts up/down and change inhaler types.
Ensure you have enough time, 30mins for new pts, and 20mins for routine check.
Lots of leaflets from Asthma UK and I use the Asthma meds card for quick management plan if pts dont monitor owm PEFs at home. Make sure your pts have correct diagnosis as you often get COPD pts in asthma clincs who will them need Spirometry with reversibility.
Good luck
Caroline
Hi there Sarahjayne,
How brave of you.
I am a children's specialist nurse & part of me want to do it but the other is frightened.
I did the diploma level course for asthma & respiratory disease but did not get any advice on setting up a clinic. Is there advice on 'how to' Stephen?
Mind it would be in a hospital setting not community. Maybe I did it so long ago that they did not do it then!!
Keep us informed.
Good luck
Ann
Hi,
I am an Asthma Nurse Advisor and so run clinics on a weekly baisis.
I have found the best approach is 20-30 min appointments, taking a detailed history, checking peak flow, device checks, AIMS testing and education. Most patients I see just need education on how to take their meds etc so be thorough with them.
Enjoy it, Asthma clinics are great and it gives you the chance to use your expert knowledge and educate the asthmatics that need it.
Good Luck
Gavin
