Steriods and teeth

Could anyone tell me if taking inhaled steriods (seratide 250) and oral steriods (prednisalone) about 4 times a year can have a bad effect on teeth. I have had crowns come off and cracks in fillings for the past few months. Nothing else has changed in my diet or the way I clean my teeth. Can anyone help?

many thanks Sheila

Years ago our dentist told us that the inhaled steroids were destroying the enamel coating on my daughter's teeth. He recommended always taking her inhale aftereating and then clean her teeth straight away, also to chew sugar free gum for 20 minutes. After that she never had any problems with her teeth. When I went onto inhaled steroids I followed the same advice and also rarely have a problem. I don't think oral steroids cause the same problems but I am not sure about the soluble ones.

Thank you for your reply Angela and I will do as you advise. I was only told to rinse my mouth and spit the water out and I must admit I have not always done this so now I am paying the price. Many thanks again

I was only on occassional short courses of steroids till I was 18 and I had no fillings. I then ended up having daily steroids dur to a worsening in my asthma and 12 years on I have 4 crowns, One tooth removed due to an abcess and large fillings in the majority of remaining teeth. My dentist said that oral steroids have effect on bones over time and this can also affect the strength of teeth.

I am on inahled steroids and occasional prednisolone and my teeth are ok but my gums are really bad and I've had to have loads of treatment to sort them out, the hygenist told me it was partly because I breathe through my mouth so more bacteria gets in and partly due to the steroids the best thing to do is rinse the mouth after using inhalers and to always use a spacer.

I too had no fillings until I was about 19!

Lots of pred on & off and now on permanently has meant all molars filled and 3 crowns cos when those teeth broke there was nowt left of the tooth to patch.

I too blame the pred - I always clean my teeth twice a day and try to eat healthily with very little sugar.

I think being on pred permanently like myself and Karly does have a big effect on teeth health.

There is also the problem now of side effects of Fosamax - a treatment for ... osteoporosis which may affect teeth - we can't win!

Thank you so much everyone for your replys. I have allways used a spacer but as you can see it has still had a bad effect on my teeth, I will be more carefull in future as it is a very expensive lesson to learn.

Many thanks Sheila

steroids and teeth

Steroids do have a effect on teeth, after 25 years of on-off courses of pred and inhalers and nebulisers my teeth are not in the best of condition, 6 teeth out and numerous fillings.

its just one of those things i think
