I have an air purifier whihc has a HEPA filter. It also has an ioniser built in but I dont really think this has any benefit. I just use the air cleaning function on it, in the hope that the HEPA filter will reduce the amount of dust in the air. According to my blood tests my dust mite allergy was extremely high. My consultant said it was really difficult to know whether air cleaners would benefit but that if we were goign to use one, then one with a HEPA filter would probably be most beneficial. Hope this helps.

I don't have either but I do have a dehumidifier as then the humidity is kept low and the dust mites don't like dry conditions and can't thrive.

also stops damp mould etc too.

I prefer fresh air if poss.

hi,

ionisers have never been very helpful for me.. i've used them on and off for the last 15 years i think. Anyway, the 'scientific opinion' is that ionisers don't help asthma at all, and can even make it worse (something about the charge it puts on particles, which i really should understand considering i'm a chemistry student!)

Air purifier might help though, i don't know. hmm, maybe i should get a dehumidifier, then i wouldn't have to put my heating up (i hate hot houses!)

good luck anyway.

anyone have any real facts?

HI all,

my boss at work has just told me that their Experts have told her to get me an Ironiser for my desk at work as it would help my asthma.

I told my boss that I have heard that they do not help and could possibly make my asthma worse but she just thinks that I am being awkward.

So does anyone have any proper facts about if they help or not. the only proof I had was that I had one for about a month around 6 years ago and it made my asthma worse as it seemed to attract more dust to that room (which was my bedroom)

Hello Pete,

I think that ionisers just change the electron charges ( or somthing like that ) in the air. Air purifiers probably suck out the impurities such as pollen, dust etc.

BUT if you work, live in a large space, room Building, etc, you are going to need a very large very powerfull bit of equipment for it to work me thinks!

I did have an ironiser but it didn't work - created Ozone! ( and a huge black smudgy mark on my nice pine shelf!)

I stick to fresh air but without the pollen.

Perhaps AUK has a leaflet on it somewhere???
