i know i might sound really thick here but anyone got any ideas what the doc at a n e meant when he said my chest was 'tight' when he listened to my back? he said i couldnt go home cos although my peak flow improved my chest was tight...does this mean that i still sounded rattly?

This is a total guess, but I wonder if he meant that you weren't moving as much air in and out of the lungs as you should be or that exhalation was still a lot longer than inhalation.
'Tight' is usually means that your chest or your back feels tight and constricted - usually a sign that the muscles in your lungs are in spasm and therefore the area feels 'tight'. This will probably be heard through the doctor's stethoscope as a wheezing sound as the air struggles to be released from your lungs.
I kind of assumed that you weren't wheezing otherwise the doctor might have said you were wheezing. Though having read Mark's post not sure why I made this assumption (might be because I don't wheeze and there has been lots of discussion about non-wheezing asthma lately)!
