i.m now getting singulair to add to the collection to try and get my awkward lungs under control! Before i start is there any advice anyone can give me i.e side effects etc? How long does it take to kick in? Nurse told me it'll work or it won't so try for a month and see. So much for mild asthma, it might be mild but it needs a lot of taming! Lol

singulair
Singulair is in a different category of drugs to most asthma meds and luckily contains no steroids! It's particularly useful in allergic and exercise induced asthma. I noticed a difference in about 2 weeks i think, but your nurse is right in that at least a month trial should be given. Most people find it really useful though they're can be a few side effects. Weird or vivid dreams are one and if these are particularly bad there shouldn't be a problem with swapping them to the morning (though do check first). Also nausea, vomiting and aches and pains though these are a lot rarer.
Good luck
Hope it works!
thank you for your quick reply anzharry. I have always had wierd and vivid dreams so i.m quite used to that lol. I quite often forget if an event was real or one of my dreams, always funny when i carry on a conversation with someone only to find it was one i dreamt! Exercise is a big trigger for me and despite being on seretide which is meant to be excellent, i.m still finding it hard, so hopefully it'll work and a combination of the two will help with exercise. I am going on holiday next week so hopefully i'll get some improvement from that and also give the singulair chance to kick in too so i'll be better for when get home to good old england!
I have been on singulair now for 5 months and my asthma is so much better. I still have a flare up but not half as bad as it used to be. So far th only side effect I have experienced is constant thirst which I can live with. I would prefer the constant thirst than horrid asthma that stopped me running a normal life. Hope you have just as much joy out of the singulair as other people
Hi,
I've been on singulair for six years. Wow. I don't notice any side effects. Once my lung doctor asked me to try taking a double dose and that made everything (mouth, face, skin) dry. But on the normal dose, the only thing I notice is that if I ever miss a dose I do have more trouble exercising. Also my current lung doctor tried to take me off of it twice but I start getting asthma symptoms in a few days.

Hi september,
singulair normally takes 4- 6 weeks to work but its more like 6 weeks than 4. I've taken singulair properly since march, and ive not really noticed much difference but i think its suppressing my p/flows. I've not had any obvious side effects from it either but it affects everyone differently. I know what you mean about your asthma needs taming mine does too badly.

I take singulair but carnt say its realy helped me at all but have had a better responce
with carbocistine so my asthma nurse wont take me off singulair as ok at the moment and
doesnt want to rock the boat xxx
did have vivid dreams and still off my food 6 weeks later from singulair xxx
The singular knocks me out for a good 4 hours, so I take it before bed but usually up again for my secret love - ventolin! HAHAHA
Thank you everyone for your replies. I'm glad it works for some of you, I shall keep my fingers crossed. Glad there aren't too many side effects too, you read the leaflet and you panic thinking 'oo if that happens' but in reality they're mild so they're not a problem or you get on with no side effects. I'm liking the lack of appetite (could do with cutting down!!) and the knocking out for 4hrs (need my beauty sleep!!), will let you know how I get on!!
My son (age 5) was put on singulair I was dissapointed we couldn't give it a good go as I had heard so many good things about it but it give him awful nightmares and when we tried giving it to him in the day he was really hyper and couldn't concentrate at school!!
Aw no clarebear, nightmares are scary enough as adults nevermind when you're little, I hate having to comfort my kids after a nightmare. Shame you couldn't continue with it. Hope he is well now
woo hoo, fingers crossed the singulair is doing the trick. I was on holiday abroad for the last two weeks and in that time I used my ventolin 3 times!! I returned to England and so far I seem to be fine too. Only difference is that my PF seems to have dropped from 500 to 460 but is reasonably stable. Don't seem to have had any side effects other than the dreams but that's not unusual for me anyway. Not causing me any problems though. Haven't tried exercise yet, so will see if its helped with that too.
My PF has dropped from 430-450 to 400 and today it is down to 280. I have managed to get it back up to 310 but with great difficulty
singulair
i'm on singular now for the winter. was on it last year aswell it seemed to do the trick if my asthma was really bad but i found it took a while for me to notice the difference.

Hi
I got prescribed Singular yesterday to add to the Seretide. I've got to try it for a month and then see!
Will let you know how it goes!
I have been on Singulair for several years now and find that it does help me.
I do hope you find it helps you too
Hey,
I've been on singulair now for about 2 and half years and it made a big difference to me at the time because a lot of my symptoms came on when I was exercising and it massively reduced them. It takes 3-5 days I think to get into your system, but don't quote me on that.
A lot of people have funny dreams on it, so if you start having mad dreams, don't panic. It's most likely the singulair. If you're getting ridiculous amounts of bad dreams, then there is alternatives so don't panic if it doesn't work properly for you.
It's good they're sorting it all out now before the winter hits, you'll be glad of it this time 2 months time
Hope this helps
Vicky
I was very young when i first started it, it was no good then, think i was about 10 when i fist started it, but was re-tried again when i was 18 and have been on it ever since then, it has done wonders for me.
I do have funny dreams, but i didnt realise singulair could cause them, its good to know im not the only one!
Hi,
I keep telling myself its mild asthma cos no wheeze or A&E visits. (Crosses fingers behind back and touches handy table).
Last year I had Singulair for the first time and as I have vivid dreams anyway, thought that wouldn't be a problem. I did have dreams but nasty horrible ones to the extent I didn't want to go to bed at night at all. DH said this is ridiculous and I came off it that week.
Low PFs recently meant nurse putting me back on Singulair. No bad dreams this time around, thank goodness. No difference to peak flow either after four weeks. My GP thinks I'm going to be one of those it doesn't actually work for.
Good luck with yours.
I was on singulair earlier this summer and it did help my mainly exercise induced asthma, but I had to come off it because it caused a nasty constant headache. I also had my first proper full-on asthma attack for several years when taking it. I'm on accolate now, which is a similar acting drug. Headaches are much less frequent and the vivid dreams have faded now. I'm not sure it's as effective as singulair tho, if at all.
hi, im no help here really as it didnt work for me and i took it for 3months, just wanted to say that i hope you are feeling better
