Another opinion

Is anybody here under the care of Dr Manser in Heartlands? Its just that since july and me going through all the meds for asthma my cons not v.happy with me and wants another opinion.

I've got a referral in with him too but aint seen him yet.

But he (Dr Mansur) actually did alot of his training at my main hospital before he moved onto Birmingham.

I used to go to the Heartlands clinic when Prof Ayres was there, and carried on going for a bit once Dr Mansur started there. I didn't stop going because of any unhappiness at all with the clinic, just that at the time my asthma became better controlled for a couple of years and I didn't see the need to keep going. Dr Mansur and the other staff are all really nice and very friendly and the clinic is very well organised; they do seem to have a high level of expertise and experience. They are very proactive with investigations and new treatments.

I have a friend with brittle asthma who still goes (she doesn't post on here) and she seems very happy with the clinic. They were instrumental in getting her PCT funding for Xolair even though her IgE is not high enough to meet the criteria, and it seems (touch wood, fingers crossed etc!) to be helping her.

I would say go for it, you've nothing to lose!

I attend the Severe and Brittle Asthma clinic at the Heartlands and I can't recommend it enough. I haven't been in hospital with my asthma for 18 months now, and before it was at least every six weeks, and often to ITU.

I think simply sitting back and considering a case right from the start makes an enormous difference, and many of us treated either at Heartlands or at the Brompton are found to have contributing factors or even slightly different lung conditions that are exacerbating or mimicking the asthma. My treatment changed quite radically and I now follow a pattern perhaps more similar to that for CF than for asthma, but it has essentially given me my life back.

I can't see another opinion can ever hurt. At the very least at least you would know that every avenue had been explored and all options considered.
