Coughed up streaky phlegm

hi, i just need some advice as ive been coughing up some phlegm that has been bloody. I'm not sure weather this could be related to my asthma as its causing me some problems as there is also normal green phlegm,any ideaswendy

wendy please phone and get appointment with gp today or if cant go to a&e as this is not a good sign a think you seriously need to get checked out.

Wendy if you have been coughing lots you can rupture a blood vessel in the back of the throat. This not serious but there are other reasons for having blood in phlegm you do need to get checked over. Please phone gp for appointment or if it continues to happen go to A&E.

thank-you both for the advice, i get out of college at 4 and my surgery closes at 6 .30 i will call them when i get home and play it by ear. thank you for being so supportive, ive kept the tissues containing the phlegm, should i take them with me when i get help?

Hi Wendy, as Bowmei says there can be very simple reasons for coughing up blood but you do need to be checked over.

Good idea to take the tissues with you (yes, everyone else may think it sounds gross!) but it's useful to see what is actually being brought up!

hey just to let you all know, i went to the docs y'day (and he was THE most incompetant old fool at the surgery (he didnt even look at my blood samples ""Ii'll take your word for it"")) turns out i have a chest infection, thanks for all of your advice and support and now i can hopefully get on the mend.
