inflammation of cartilage.......
Hi smithy,
Chondritis is inflammation of cartilage; This can more clearly be seen by splitting the word down into it's two parts:
'chondr'- meaning affecting cartilage
'-itis' - inflammation.
the '-itis' bit is almost like the old Maureen Lipman BT advert of years ago (am really showing my age now...) where she's talking - 'At least he's got an '-ology'! - the suffix means roughly the same thing whatever it follows....
In your case, I'm guessing it probably means costo-chondritis [inflammation of the cartilage of the ribs where the meet the sternum (breastbone)] which causes chest pain, both on breathing, but also with local tenderness on directly pressing the chest either side of the sternum.
But to give other examples of 'itis' - thinking about other things that get inflammed - appendix (appendicitis), conjunctiva in the eye (conjunctivitis), bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchi)
Hope that helps
