Nut free foods

Can anyone give me any web sites that actually list Food Companies that make totally nut free foods of all types.

Im finding it hard to be sure as so many labels now state""may have"" and such like, that its hard to be realistic. Any ideas?

United Biscuits who make McVities etc and loads of other brands (Bertie Bassetts too I think) have a very useful and comprehensive website.

I emailed Heinz to ask about preservatives in their foods and they sent me a *hugs* document about everything that's nut free, gluten free, and practically every else free except for preservatives. You'll most likely get useful info from them since they seem to be able to cope with the idea of nut free.

I found emailing individual companies the best way to go but there are sites out there that list companies' policies and products. Oh yeah, I think Cadbury's say on their website ...

You could also try the Anaphylaxis Campaign website - I'm sure they have links to such sites and also if you become a member (it's about £20) they will send out any food alerts to you as they appear. Thier web addy is anaphylaxis.org.uk

I hope that helps a bit, even though it's not very comprehensive. Maybe someone else will have more info.

Becky.

If you ring sainsburys they will provide you with a list of their own branded foods. Also so will cadburys.

I did this a couple of years ago so they may of changed but I doubt it. Most major companys will now happily send you out a safe list if you ask.

I have to say dont trust tescos as recently they made a few mistakes and couple of us on here suffered as a result. I use to eat the egg fried rice as it used pasteurised egg which Im ok with but they changed their recipe to use normal egg but did not put any notification on the packet or anywhere and as a result I had a very bad reaction.

Also watch out for products from instore bakeries as they do not legally have to carry the ingrediants on the packaging. I have recently contacted the food standard agency about this. They normally will tell you if you ask in store, the rules governing in store bakerys are different to that of packaged food and no where near as strict. So be careful.

Do some nice treat type foods!

Sainsburys will send you a BOOK yep a book (small) of their own products!

But generally the only brand I've found for genereal foods I trust is ""Co-op"" branded stuff (their labelling is very good)!

Ive sent for every nut free list there is but very FEW of them are nut traces free so I learnt what was safe and what wasnt the hard way!

thanks guys.

I have now got a list of safe products from Heinz, and am waiting on Tescos, asda and sainsburys. Have to say tescos werent particularly helpful! I found a list on the Cadburys web site but my pc wont let me print it so have noted down stuff i know Chloe and i like.

I had a long chat the other night with chloe about food choices and i think that her reaction scared her so much that she understands that she has to be careful but im going to be extra vigilant as we do like little tea rooms on holidays!

take care all.

Meant to say i ve also found another useful site

Nonuts.co.uk

Nestle will send you a list if you email them but its only valid for a set period of time and you have to remember to email them again for the new list!

Tesco will sent me a lovely bunch of flowers after i was nut poisoned with an un warning labelled sausage a couple of years ago so i don't really trust their labelling either but they have changed it to that easier read system....

And Morrisons appear to be useless at the minute everything seems to have may contain nuts on it!

I take issue with Tescos labelling on the basis that their milk shows the warning ""ALLERGY ADVICE: CONTAINS MILK"" I should hope it does! If this isn't a case of covering their own backs then I don't know what is?! Why can't they just label things sensibly?!

Just back from shopping - whinge warning!

I just find the tesco labelling confusing, i know they're trying hard to get rid of may contain and i know i'm moaning having just spent 2 hours reading packets with tantruming toddlers but the graded labels just make me confused about whether to eat something or not especially things i've been eating for years, Everythings a risk analysis!

I have in my hand a packet of tesco free from pasta which says

Contains soya (good it's meant to be soya pasta, wheat free)

Recipe- no nuts ( so they didn't intentionally mean to put any nuts in it and it shouldn't contain big lumps of nut)

Ingredients- cannot guarantee nut free ( so we're not sure if at some point anywhere someone may have waved a packet of nuts near it or not sure where the ingredients came from is nut free even though we didn't mean to include nuts in the recipe there may possibly be a trace somewhere at somepoint in maybe one packet or there may be a huge chance of whole hazelnuts contaminating every packet but we're not sure or we're just covering our back?)

Factory- Product made in a nut free area (why if it may contain nuts anyway?) but nuts used elsewhere in factory ( oh well at least its not the same line!)

CAUTION- DO NOT EAT RAW ( well ok it is pasta usually cooked!)

So is it nut safe or not, do you risk it? I guess that's as close as you can get to knowing it's ok so off to cook lunch.

whinge over!

Hellooo!

I do shop in Tescos and although I am not a no-nuts person (Esxcuse the pun) I do find their nut warning a little confusing. I always glance at the warning for egg, then if it is egg free I still check the ingredients as once I picked up a yummy looking little chocolate cake, no egg warning but egg in the ingredients pannel - I did point it out and also contacted the anaphylaxis campain too!

I have eaten foods which, when half way through them, been told there may be traces of egg in, with no problems, but I didn't continue to eat them! I think there is a slight risk but not alwasy worth it if you are anaphylactic to tiny traces!

Nut free food -

Muffins, flapjacks (Extreme Yumminess!) by Bakin' Boys are guarenteed no- nuts as are Kinerton chocolate! Both widely available in shops.

Morrisons - give them a wide berth as they won't suply any allergy info either by post and they have abvsolutely no info on diet or allergy on their web site.

I have recently discovered that due to EU labeling legistlation that some unlikely food items now cary an egg warning - Manchego (Spanish sheep cheese) and Pesto.... both of which I have been eating with virtually no problems. They contain Lysozome which is an enzyme extracted from egg but rarely produces an allergic reaction (PHEW!) So I am safe with that.... apart from the odd tingliness but I thought that was because it was a hard strong cheese! LOL!

One thing I have noticed about some of the Free from ranges that supermarkets do for wheat free, milk free etc is that they have nut warnings!

So, if you are allergic to loads of food stuffs, finding 'ready made' items like biscuits can be hard!

As noted previously, the anaphylaxis campaign is very good and the help line is Excellent!!

baker boys flapjacks and muffins -mmmm v yummy and so clearly labeled ! Y cant all manufacturers label as clearly!! Kinnertons as u mention also v good but not so easy to get hold of!!

We had 1 little scare on holiday when Grandad bought clhloe an ice cream - strawberry but scoop couldnt have been cleaned properly from previous ice cream and lip and face started tp swell but a very quick double dose of piriton and a follow up one later as well as her puffer abated it but got me worried as this would have only been a trace so we stopped eating out after that for her sake.

I am waiting for the list from Nestlesand sainsburys.

has anyone had any luck with a list from ASDA? My pc wont let me on their web site to try!!

Tescos- ggggrrr shopping takes triple the length of time now so much so the battery on the shops scooter died b4 i had finished my shopping v embarrassing!!

The best one I found from Tesco's recently was dry roasted peanuts and on back it said 'may contain nuts'!!

Must be a nighmare Kirsten cause they all seem to hedge bets.

Den

lol

it is a bit of a mare as now there is both Chloe and me with food allergies shopping takes forever but hopefully will get easier once i get more info from various food companies and get used to whats safe but even so hubby is now refusing to any more than a basic shop as hes scared of making mistakes.

Den- thats a bit like tescos other speciality- on a milk carton - May conatin milk!!!

I spoke to the manager of my local bakery and i can no longer shop there either as they bake cakes with nuts in in same place as other cakes/bread which is very dissapointing.

Still waiting to hear from ASDA and a few other places but gradually collating a good reference list just need twice as many hrs to do the shopping.

After a mess up at my GP we are still waiting for Chloes appt -so much for Urgent!! I dread to think of what the consequenes maybe if this delay has happened to someone who isnt as clued up about allergies as i am!! it doesnt bare thinking about.

Ho Hum these things are sure sent to try us!!!
