I stopped mine successfully about eight years ago. i had been on it for about 5 years and it had worked really well initially. However, it kept needing to be increased and I wasnt responding to increasing doses of terbutaline through it. I weaned down slowly at home and then went into hospital to have the final few mg reduced over a week or so. now I am off the pump I respond much faster to my nebs and it seems easier to recognize a decline in my asthma. It was almost as if the sub cut masked things so much that I never noticed how bad things were until I was very unwell. Now I seem to be able to pick up on more subtle changes in my asthma. sub cut was a life saver at the time though and I wouldnt have finished uni without being on my terbutaline.

Good Luck with the reduction. hope it is successful

Hello!

I was on s/c permanently from 1994 to around 2002 I think. I had similar problems of needing silly doses, not responding to IVs unless really high etc. I weened off it hosp over a week, well we just reduced the IV ventolin by silly amounts every day to 5 ml an hour. I do still use it as & when, but my asthma changed character and became more type 2 brittle as well as type 1.

I am a bit better for it but my asthma came a bit more unpredictable.

Another reason was it was begining to affect my heart!

Give it a go!

Thank you, looks like it all went smoothly for you both, going to stop mine over 5 days yay! Can't wait to be free!

HI Clare,

i come off my S/C from time to time, usually during a well phase, i dont bother going into hospital to do it, just wean at home, i let my cons know my intentions eventually.

the last time i came off was for 10 weeks, i was gutted to have to go back on it, but i wanted to get a job as an outdoor instructor and needed to be well enough, i run my maintanance at 5mg, but do go up to 7.5 from time to time.

good luck

PS it wasn't easy! needed a few extra nebs and stuborness to get through the nights!

I can stop and start it now at home when needed but need to call my cons if it isn't working too well on 7.5mg (Ventolin) before I can increase the dose. I find it fairly easy to wean off now as long as I haven't been on it 3 months or so!

It helps keep me at home and gives me a bit more control over my asthma

So far so good, has gone well, lungs not noticing much difference whoop! Needed a few extra nebs last night and thats it.
