Hi Julie,
I'm a runner, - well more a jogger these days, but I used to represent my county and north of England pre roller coaster effects of recent asthma changes.
However I still manage to get out and do some training and the odd race, despite big breathing probs, but more in the summer/spring than winter months. Keeps me sane!
I’m doing the AUK Lake Dorney 10k run near Windsor in early April, fingers and toes crossed! Ran it last year and really enjoyed the camaraderie and atmosphere.
Have also persuaded my grown-up eldest son to enter as well. He sits in front of a computer all day – his job – and had become very unfit. He’s been following a training plan and has now lost a stone in weight (over two months). We aim to finish the run together!
Good luck on your 10k Kenilworth race, training and sponsorship. Don’t feel I can ask my work colleagues, friends etc to sponsor me again,( they sponsored me for the AUK 10k run last year) but my son is mobilising his workplace and friends for sponsorship.
Let us know how you get on.
Mia

Hello!
Runnning/stumbling/puffing around the AUK 10k this year too, Mia! - along with a group of about 7 others, mainly from the AUK hols, but also my bro and ""nearly"" sister-in-law.
Training v difficult in the cold. Went out on Monday - didn't realise how quickly the temp had dropped - definitely won't be doing that again...
May be good to share tips/training tactics/mutual support on here? Any good hints for exercise induced asthma?
Thanks & good luck to you both on your event. I would of ran with you but its quite a long way for me. (car wise )
Its a good excuse to get fit too! After exercise my lungs feel huge, so i think exercise will help....... plus its for a good cause!!!
At least we can encourage each other through training. I will ask my asthma nurse tomorrow, when it will be a good time for me to start
Best i can do at mo is say good luck to all of you. would love to join you but not sure would get to far at mo since con said asthma badley controlled but fingers crossed for another year. am happy to sponser tho.
When is your event, Julie?
Personally I am finding it very difficult to know when to run and when not to. And I'm a doctor....!! Some days I will feel fine lung-wise, go for a run and have to stop. Other days I will feel just fine throughout. Others I'll feel a bit squiffy but then feel better after a run. I think I'm just odd (no comments thank you!).
Putting a medical hat on, I would give yourself a good few weeks clear of your attack before you start training, start off very gently perhaps with brisk walks rather than runs, then build up gradually. Stop if you feel bad and wait until you feel better. Make sure you factor in plenty of rest days as well. Keep up the medication regularly and keep in touch with your doctor or asthma nurse!
Hello again,
Might see you at Lake Dorney then Cathbear, and don’t forget to wear a fleecy scarf over your mouth and nose next time you go out in this weather!xxx
Do you always check your PF before running? I’ve noticed that even if my symptoms are under control, I can still get problems. Through trial and error I’ve worked out my optimum PF reading for running, plus taking the meds that work for me, and in enough time. For example I use different meds in the summer - more anti histamines,- than in the cooler months.
I can’t run at all when its icy cold these days, even after using my neb. The cold dry air causes BHR mayhem!
I’ve always had EIA though, even when a competitive runner. The standard advice is to ALWAYS use your short acting reliever at least twenty minutes before warm ups and exercising, and warm up with stretches, and short bursts of aerobic activity. I’ve found that dancing to music, and running up and down stairs are as good as any other more ‘structured’ warm up activities.
Think we are all a bit odd! Must be built into our jeans!

Heres the link for my charity run twocastlesrun.org.uk/
Its a nice run, not to long and 20 minutes away from me. Will help get me to weight watchers goal as well, especially since christmas!!!!!
I have 3 working sheeps dogs, so i do lots of walking anyway. My partner has been taking them out since i have had a bad chest. I feel quite unfit since my spell of flu & the virus i had the other week. So i will have to start a fresh. I walk them 2 hours a day 3 hours at the week end, so by building this back up over a period of time will prepare me for the running stage of training!
Hi Mia,
Shall I wear a big fluorescent back sign with ""CATHBEAR"" emblazoned on it....no?...methinks not!!
Entertained the scarf idea but feel way too suffocating and claustrophbic. Mad, isn't it. Might try a bit of boogying before my next run - whenever that may be, cos His Nibs has banned me from going out tonight > as it is too cold (although I came to exactly the same conclusion when I stepped out of my nice arm surgery this evening, to a temperature of -0.5 degrees!).
Website looks good Julie. Got a goodly amount of time to train there, so no rush needed!
Julie, like the date. That time of a year is very good for me re asthma probs. Might be even better this year if global warming continues. My lungs just love warm weather! And, not visited Warwick castle for ages! Or Stratford. *sigh*
Cathbear. MIGHT wear MIA vest name if you do the same re CATHBEAR! But am now committed to AUK Lake D. 10k run cos of a small family bet. Previously poor student son, but now slightly more affluent post grad plus job – although extremely hampered by potato coach lifestyle- has thrown down an irresistible challenge…
Tis v. b. cold tonight. Glad you are being sensible!
Are you local to warwick Mia? If so fancy running the two castle run? : )
Am very tempted Julie. The date is good for me, - re all sorts of reasons - and the location is quite close to where I live... well within a short blast along the M42 Will have a closer look at their webpage.

Warwick isn't too far from me either. Again, M42 wise...may have to see how the Dorney Lake run and my exams go!
Would be nice if we could run it together. At least were raising some money for a very good cause I'm looking forward to it!!!
Although i wont be running im hoping to come and support all those mad people-ooops sorry runners as its only about an hr from me at Dorney Lake.Am trying to persuade hubby to run it but he has a club fixture that day
Hmmmm, I remember a time when my weekends were ruled by club fixtures, plus carting the kids around, and my trusty little ventolin inhaler (PRE allergy causing changes in propellants) stuffed down my sports bra!
Tell your other half to chill out and have some running, non competitive fun Hopalong!
Julie, - will definitely do the Two Castle Run!
Cathbear, a good post exam destress?
Think I am going to have to make up that fluorescent back sign then Hops
Mia - exams won't be over by June 10th, unfortunately - pah
Will meet up with you Mia if you want a running buddy.
My tracky is hanging up in my wardrobe ready!! Might be in there a few weeks yet!! I'll make a start on polishing my trainers!!! Will arrange nearer the time
Anybody else joining us for a stroll?
I'm all excited now
Good idea Julie.
Maybe we could recce the race route rogether. I'm not doing any running while it's very cold, and also have a small night-time breathing problem atm, but am OK during the day.
Roll on the even a little bit warmer weather!
We can take it at our own pace Mia. No rush eh!!
Looking forward to it.
